Dublin: Well-known singer Ed Sheeran made a young girl's dying wish come true when he serenaded her over the phone just moments before her death. Triona Priestley's family is now extending their gratitude to the thousands of people who participated in the #SongForTri online campaign.

On April 1, Ed Sheeran phoned in to say hello, and then he sang her favourite song: Little Bird. Triona, who was in the final stages of her cystic fibrosis, drifted off to sleep while Ed sang to her. Just moments after her family hung up the phone with him, Triona died peacefully in her sleep.

"Ed rang Triona and personally sang Little Bird to her as she took her last breaths," Triona's friend Lucy Hanlon wrote on Facebook. "Triona left us listening to her idol surrounded by all the people who loved her."

Tri's brother Colm is incredibly grateful. He said: "Myself and my family would like to thank Ed Sheeran and everyone who started and supported the #SongForTri campaign.

What they gave us and her was a beautiful last moment together. Triona slipped into a sleep as Ed was singing to her and passed away shortly afterwards. So Ed Sheeran sang her to sleep," he added.
