In the Commonwealth Games 2026, national record holder Tejaswin Shankar scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a decathlon medal in the mega tournament. Overcoming a knee injury, he managed to clinch a bronze medal.
His national record is 8057 points.
He managed to collect a total of 7976 points in the 10-event discipline and competed over two days. Shankar is suffering from chronic patellar tendinitis that forced him to pull out of the men's high jump event in the Glasgow Games.
He was in tears after being forced to withdraw from the high jump event following his opening attempt after the flare-up of the long-standing issue.
This is also his second medal in the Commonwealth Games. In the previous edition of the tournament in 2022, he won a bronze medal in the high jump.
The 27-year-old, who also won a decathlon silver in the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, was second overnight after five events behind Canada's Damian Warner, who eventually took the silver with 8036 points.
The Indian jumped to the third spot after the ninth event, and he maintained that place with a fifth-place finish in 1500m, which was the last event. Grenada's Lindon Victor won the gold medal with 8096 points.
Earlier, India's superstar Neeraj Chopra clinched a silver medal in the men's javelin throw while Yashvir Singh won the bronze medal.
Chopra registered his season's best throw of 85.83 m in his second attempt, which helped him finish second. His throw in the ongoing edition of the Commonwealth Games was slightly better than the one he produced in the Doha Diamond League, where he registered a throw of 85.69 m to finish fourth.
Meanwhile, Singh, on his Commonwealth Games debut, took everyone by surprise when he registered his personal best throw of 85.41 m. He tasted success in the sixth and final attempt as India secured the second and third podium finishes. Singh's best before the Commonwealth Games was 83. 72 m.
