Hyderabad: Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed gave his country some early success in their maiden Test in India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal here yesterday. When Taskin disturbed India opener KL Rahul's (2) furniture on the fourth ball of the Test's very first over, the visitors believed they would make more inroads into the strong Indian batting order. However, it took another 50 overs and 180 runs to get India's second wicket, when off-spinner Mehedi Hasan sent back Cheteshwara Pujara.
Bangladesh were let down by their bowling attack. Karnataka's Rahul, who scored 199 against England in his last Test at Chennai, played a loose shot off Taskin's fuller length delivery, which he tried to drive through the covers without any footwork. It resulted in an inside edge which crashed into the stumps.
Taskin admitted the bowlers could do far better. "We had a plan, but the Indians also batted well. On this kind of pitch, bowlers need to be patient. If you bowl short and wide, the batsmen will score easily. We need to bowl a tight line and length and according to the field. Only then we can survive," said 21-year-old pacer from Dhaka. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and Hasan bowled 20 overs each, claiming one wicket apiece. The most experienced of the lot - left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan - bowled 13 overs but went wicketless.
