Mumbai dominated Chandigarh with both bat and ball on Day Two of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group ‘D' match at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

India pacer Tushar Deshpande starred with a sensational 5-17 as his fiery spell rattled the visitors, who were bowled out for just 78 in 19.1 overs in reply to Mumbai's 429.

Following on, Chandigarh lost opener Vishu Kashyap without scoring and were still trailing by 351 runs at stumps.

Chandigarh's batters struggled to display the temperament required to counter Mumbai's bowlers.

Deshpande, who represented India ‘A' against Australia ‘A' last month, was particularly devastating, ripping through the visitors' top order.

He struck in his fourth over, clean bowling left-handed opener Arslan Khan (2). The 31-year-old then dismissed Arjun Azad (20) with a bouncer that the batter attempted to hook, only to find deep fine-leg fielder Sylvester D'Souza. Deshpande followed it up by bowling No. 4 batter Shivam Bhambri (0) with a beautiful outswinger before completing his hat-trick by inducing Dipender Kush (0) to edge another outgoing delivery to first slip, where Yashasvi Jaiswal took the catch.

Playing his 50th first-class match, Deshpande claimed his sixth five-wicket haul when he trapped Raj Bawa leg-before, leaving Chandigarh reeling at 29-6. His first spell of seven overs included a maiden, with just 17 runs conceded. Deshpande became only the sixth Mumbai bowler to take a Ranji Trophy hat-trick. Pacer Mohit Avasthi chipped in with 3-9, while D'Souza claimed 2-51, including the wicket of top-scorer Nishunk Birla (33).

Earlier, Mumbai skipper Siddhesh Lad, who was unbeaten on 80 overnight, added six runs before falling to Bawa (4-73). Lad's 86 included nine boundaries.

Mumbai's lower order then extended the team's overnight total of 249-5 by 180 runs. All-rounder Tanush Kotian scored 58 (5x4), Avasthi remained unbeaten on 56 (6x4, 2x6), Deshpande contributed 44 (4x4, 2x6), while Shams Mulani made 39 (4x4, 1x6). For Chandigarh, pacer Rohit Dhanda claimed 4-78.

"I wanted to make this game special as it was my 50th match. But I wasn't thinking about a hat-trick or anything like that. I just wanted to give my 100 per cent today [Monday]. When I was batting, I noticed some patches on the wicket where the ball was doing a bit. So, my only focus was to bowl as many deliveries as possible in the right areas, and it paid dividends," Deshpande told reporters after the day's play.

The pacer also revealed that he wanted to bowl his best delivery to claim his maiden first-class hat-trick.

Asked about missing out on selection for India ‘A's upcoming New Zealand tour, Deshpande said he had reset himself ahead of the Ranji Trophy match. "There is always motivation to play Test cricket for India, irrespective of whether I am selected for the India ‘A' tour or not. I thought about the non-selection for a day, but I have always told myself that I want to chase performance, not selection. So, I came back to the Wankhede Stadium, reset myself, went back to my process and bowled again," Deshpande said.
