Cristiano Ronaldo's legacy as one of the finest football players ever is unquestionable. But despite having won nearly every accolade available, the FIFA World Cup has proved elusive for the 41-year-old.

Ahead of Portugal's opening tie against DR Congo, there is a sense that the 2026 edition could be his best opportunity, as Portugal now have a squad that's among the very best.

In attack, Portugal have Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, while the midfield is manned by the PSG duo of Vitinha and Joao Neves, who are fresh from winning back to back UCL titles. In defence, Ruben Dias and Nuno Mendes provide the grit. DR Congo may not have the star names to rival their opponents, but they do have players of English Premier League pedigree, such as Axel Tuanzebe, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Yoane Wissa, who can trouble Portugal.
