World No. 1 Andy Murray lost 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Borna Coric in the third round of the Madrid Masters yesterday. Murray has now failed to reach the quarter-finals in any of his last three Masters series events, as well as suffering a shock fourth round exit at the Australian Open to Mischa Zverev in January.

Novak Djokovic overcame stiff resistance from Feliciano Lopez to book his place in the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 7-5 win. While Kei Nishikori set up a quarter-final clash with Djokovic by sweeping aside David Ferrer 6-4, 6-3 in the third round.

Meanwhile, among the women, Eugenie Bouchard ousted Angelique Kerber to reach the quarter-finals. Following her big win over Maria Sharapova, Bouchard led Kerber 6-3, 5-0 before quit due to a thigh injury.
