British MotoGP: Aprilia’s Martin breaks lap record to clinch pole

MotoGP world championship leader Jorge Martin set a new lap record on his way to pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Spanish rider Martin was not only the fastest in Saturday's midday qualifying session in perfect conditions at the Silverstone track, but also broke the all-time lap record with a time of 1min 56.160sec.

It was the second time in two days that the record fell after Martin's Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi blitzed a 1min 56.280sec lap in practice on Friday despite fracturing his collarbone at the German MotoGP last time out.

Later in the day, Martin also won the sprint race ahead of Trackhouse's Ai Ogura and Bezzecchi.
