Two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso has indicated that his future in Formula 1 may ultimately depend on whether driving the current generation of cars remains thrilling.

The Spaniard and his Aston Martin squad have endured a difficult campaign with an uncompetitive and unreliable vehicle, the team's initial design under renowned designer Adrian Newey. Alonso holds the team's sole point of the season, secured at Monaco.

Set to turn 45 next week, Alonso signed a 'multiyear' contract extension in 2024 and confirmed he remains committed to Aston Martin through 2027, stating, "so I'm not moving."

"For me, I'm relaxed. As I've said many times, I'm thinking. I need to know what I do next year and in the years to come. I feel fresh, I feel motivated, I feel fast, but I need to enjoy also what I do," Alonso said ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The veteran driver voiced strong frustration over recent rounds in Great Britain and Belgium, where energy management issues left cars depleted of power along lengthy straights.

"I think it's not fun to watch, it's not fun to drive, and we've been repeating the same thing every single Grand Prix," he said. "It's not the same adrenaline that I used to have driving a Formula 1 car. That's something that I need to put on the table. It's not a problem with the competitiveness of the team. It's just a problem of whether Formula 1 gives me the adrenaline that I need to live."

High hopes for Aston Martin at Hungary

Aston Martin is debuting a technical upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix. While a power unit enhancement from engine partner Honda is scheduled for a later release, the tight and twisty nature of the circuit could help offset the car's current straight-line deficits.

Alonso reiterated his firm confidence that the combined expertise of Newey and Honda will eventually produce a championship-calibre package.

"I think I have a pretty clear picture of the team, that we will fix all the problems. They take time, but I have no doubts, zero doubts, that Adrian will provide the best car on the grid sooner or later," he said.
