Roger Federer hints at future appearances after returning at US Open

Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer expressed his gratitude to supporters following his return to the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the US Open 2026 Legends event, while also suggesting he may participate in future exhibition matches.

The former World No. 1, who stepped away from professional tennis in 2022, was welcomed with a standing ovation from the New York crowd. Federer secured a 6-3 victory over long-time rival Andy Roddick in a one-set singles clash, before pairing up with John McEnroe to defeat Andre Agassi and Roddick 7-5 in a doubles contest.

Following the match, Federer shared his hope of returning to action again in the future and admitted that he enjoyed his time on the court in New York.

"I hope this isn't my last time on court. John McEnroe is still out there doing what he loves, and that inspires me to believe that maybe someday I'll get another chance to return to this court and play in front of all my fans," Federer said after the match.

Federer thanked all the fans for turning up and admitted that he enjoyed every minute of his match.

"It was an honour, it was special, it was amazing. A big thank you to everyone in the stadium and to all the fans who have supported me over the years. It's been incredible, and I've enjoyed every moment," he added.

Federer's family present at the US Open

The five-time US Open champion, who won five straight titles at Flushing Meadows from 2004 to 2008, enjoyed the milestone occasion alongside his family, who watched him from the stands.

"It's obviously incredible to share this with my family. My wife and my parents are here too. But honestly, to have this moment here at the US Open in New York where I've had so much success has been incredible," he said.

Federer, who turned 45 earlier this month, is set to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 29.

"Hopefully, you have not had enough of me, and by Monday when we have a ring ceremony on centre court again, I'll see you then," Federer said.

Before Federer took to the court, Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz participated in the mixed doubles tourament at the US Open.
