Looking for new friends after your old ones have moved out of the city? Or maybe you just need a fresh set of faces to talk to? That's where this city of dreams makes your wish come true. But unlike in the movies, you don't just run into them on a Bandra platform or at Kitaab Khana. It takes work and for that you need to put yourself out there (and invest a bit of money). Welcome to the sphere of clubs and collectives.

For me, my friends moved back to their hometowns or left the city for jobs, leaving me feeling quite alone. That's when I started going to film clubs, book reading meetups, plays, and discussion events. Mumbai is a place filled with endless opportunities to meet new, interesting people. And here's what you can do to find people who just… click!

Movie clubs for cinema lovers

The Bombay Movie Collective is quite a famous place to meet interesting people and watch films that matter. I've formed friendships and friendly faces with not just the audience, but also the curators themselves. There's also 3 Art House which showcases short films from aspiring filmmakers, giving you a chance to peek into the minds of those who still care about cinema as an art form.

All you need to do to make friends again as an adult is to step out of your comfort zone and attend events and meetups. PIC/ISTOCK

Connecting via notes and beats

Like I said, there's something for everyone in this city. If you love vinyl sessions, FRICTION is doing a music listening session almost every week for free. You just need to show up at Method, Kala Ghoda. The best part is everyone is here for an experience and no one is shy at making conversation. There are multiple jam, music sessions across the city like at Baroke, Ink N Brew, and Records. Coffee by Veranda. Yes, they come with a cover charge, but nothing's free forever. It pays you back with a beautiful time, and a satisfying experience.

Be the smartest in the room

That's a misleading way of saying you could go to quiz nights. It's one of the most competitive and easiest icebreakers with strangers, especially, if you go to the right places. Doolally does them once a week. There's also Bombay Quiz Club which has been the most iconic place for quizzing. What more could you even ask for? Quiz games stimulate your brain and bring you closer to the people you're competing with. And they also have snacks. Just don't feel bad if you don't get the answers right.
