Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Meta on Wednesday, June 10, announced a strategic partnership to develop India's first built-to-suit AI-enabled hyperscale data centre for the global technology giant.

The facility, to be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, will have an initial capacity of 168 MW and is expected to be operational within two years, with provisions for future expansion.

The project marks Meta's first built-to-suit data centre investment in India and underscores the country's growing importance in the global AI and digital ecosystem in collaboration with Reliance Industries (RIL). Meta will lease capacity from the facility to support its global infrastructure operations and rapidly expanding AI computing requirements.

Reliance Industries to provide infrastructure and end-to-end services

Under the agreement, RIL will serve as a comprehensive infrastructure partner, providing end-to-end services across the data centre's lifecycle.

These include design, construction, utility management, renewable power supply, network connectivity, and fully managed operational services, positioning the conglomerate as a one-stop solutions provider for hyperscale AI infrastructure.

As per RIL, the Jamnagar location offers several strategic advantages, including robust delivery capabilities, access to renewable energy, abundant water resources, proximity to India's western submarine cable landing stations, and connectivity through Jio's extensive fibre network.

RIL and Meta focus on sustainability

Sustainability is expected to be a key feature of the project. The data centre will run on renewable energy and utilise desalinated seawater for cooling, aligning with the environmental commitments of both companies while addressing the intensive energy and cooling demands of AI infrastructure.

The partnership also aligns with the Government of India's efforts to establish the country as a global technology and AI hub. Recent policy initiatives have designated data centres as strategic national infrastructure and introduced frameworks aimed at attracting large-scale AI investments.

Mukesh Ambani and Mark Zuckerberg express their views about the partnership

Speaking on the development, Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of RIL, said the partnership represented a transformative moment for India's digital infrastructure.

"Building India's first built-to-suit data centre for a global technology leader of Meta's scale demonstrates India's readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. At Reliance, we are committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation - not just for India, but for the world. Jamnagar will become a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing, and we are proud to partner with Meta to make this vision a reality," Ambani said.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, said the collaboration would strengthen the company's global AI capabilities while deepening its commitment to India.

"We're proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data centre in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India's economy," Zuckerberg said.
