Vashi Fine Arts Society (VFAS) has pulled it off yet again. Its yearly competition in Carnatic music saw students and teachers turn up in large numbers.
According to Mohana Ramaswamy, the secretary of VFAS, the attendance was so high that the schedule had to be modified.

Candidates from suburbs as far as Kandivli, Goregaon, Dombivli, Kalyan, Mulund, Thane, Powai, Matunga, Wadala and Chembur showed up at the venue on December 15. Parents and their enthusiastic wards were seen eagerly waiting at the entrance of Kannada Sangha, an hour before the competition.
There were six groups (Groups 1 to 6) and a total of 160 competing children. Group 1 had 55 entries, group 2 had 45 and group 5 had 25. All children were in the age bracket of 9 to 15 years. The contest for Groups 2, 3 and 6, which has entrants above the age of 15 had to be postponed. It will now be held on December 22.
Mohana said, “The aim of the competition is to provide a platform for budding artistes and learn from their co-participants.” She added that past winners and participants had done well in many TV programmes on regional channels.
The judges for the event were Chandraa Mohan and Malati Krishnakumar from Vashi, Bala Subbalakshmi from Sion, and Saraswati Srinivasan from Sanpada.
The results are expected to be announced within the next couple of days and the winners will be given prizes and certificates during VFAS’ Annual Day function sometime in May next year.u00a0
