Political heir apparent to his father, Aaditya Thackeray, was on Tuesday promoted as a 'leader' of the Shiv Sena. The party's national executive endorsed the youth leader's new role amid much fanfare. The elevation has further consolidated Aaditya's number two position in the party. Aaditya's promotion has been in the pipeline for long, and the party was awaiting a grand occasion to announce it, said sources.

The elder son of Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has always been part of decision making in the party, but now his position will give him more power and opportunity to hone his leadership skills ahead of major polls next year. He has been leading the party's youth wing for some years now. The 27-year-old has been refurbishing the Sena with an urban and educated youth base that comes from various regions and ethnicities. He is considered the first in the family who took up social media to connect with the people. The Sena's social media module has beaten other parties - the fact that the Congress, the BJP and NCP are concerned about.
The post of 'leader' is considered next to the party president. Among 13 'leaders', including five who were added yesterday, Aaditya, the youngest and most junior in politics, will, however, be most powerful because of his lineage. He will work with veterans such as Manohar Joshi, Sudhir Joshi, Liladhar Dake, Divakar Raote, Sanjay Raut, Ramdas Kadam, Gajanan Kirtikar and Subhash Desai. Besides Aaditya, Eknath Shinde, Chandrakant Khaire, Aanandrao Adsul and Anant Gite are newcomers. The senior Thackeray's personal aide Milind Narvekar, who harbours political ambitions, was made the party's secretary. Narvekar plays an important role in Uddhav's politicking module.
