Man steals 47 ATM cards; carries transactions worth Rs 10 lakh

On Tuesday, the Palghar police arrested 28-year-old man for allegedly stealing ATM cards and carrying out transactions worth over Rs 10 lakh. The accused, identified as Rohit Pandey had, on June 14, helped a man
who was facing difficulties operating an ATM, and in the process had flicked his card and replaced it with a fake one, said Sub Inspector Vijay Chavan of Valiv police station.


"We checked the CCTV footage of the ATM kiosk and the vicinity and zeroed in on Pandey, a Vasai resident. We found 47 such stolen ATM cards with him. He has made transactions worth Rs 10.73 lakh with them. He was purchasing jewellery with such cards. We have recovered Rs 7.90 lakh so far," Chavan said.


In a similar incident, unidentified robbers cut open the ATM machine of an IDBI bank using a gas cutter and escaped with the cash in the wee hours on Thursday at Kudos, Taluka Wada district Palghar.


According to police sources, the whole incident was captured on the CCTV camera installed near the ATM which showed the three accused, with covered faces, entering the ATM of the bank around 3:30 am on Wednesday. After they managed to open the shutter and then with the help of a gas cutter they opened the ATM machine and made way with all the cash in just 10 minutes.

Shopkeepers realized there was a robbery when they arrived to open their respective stores in the morning and also informed the local Wada police. The cops rushed to the spot and retrieved the CCTV footage of the ATM as well as nearby shops for their investigation. The total amount that was stolen has not been revealed.

In the morning when the people from nearby shops reached to open their shops realized they informed the local Wada police, police rushed the spot immediately checked and took the all the CCTV footage of the ATM and nearby shops and began the investigation, exactly how much amount was robbed was not revealed. An FIR was registered under various sections of IPC against the unknown accused and the Wada police along with Palghar district local crime branch are currently investigating the matter.
