With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) failing time and again to attract contractors for working on closure of Deonar dumping ground, the BMC will now be appointing National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to take care of the waste management at the city's largest dumping ground. The proposal for the same will be tabled before the standing committee on November 6, for approval.

The BMC first floated the tender for the waste to energy plant back in 2016. Due to various reasons including lack of available technology, the contractors didn't show any interest in the project. Despite floating the tender twice and giving four extensions, the situation hasn't changed so far. The Bombay High Court gave a 'last extension' to continue to dump solid waste at the Deonar dumping ground till December this year.

In the meanwhile, the BMC will appoint NEERI as a consultant by giving them a contract worth Rs 1.5 crore after the recommendations made by the High Court-appointed monitoring committee to do so. The consultant will not just monitor the situation of waste at the dump yard but will also collect all the past information and draft the estimations and technical details that would help the BMC to attract the bidders to come forward for the closure of Deonar dumping ground.

A civic official from the SWM department said, "The proposal has been put before the standing committee and after the approval they will manage the situation at dumping ground by giving us suggestions to keep the pollution in check and also guide us on what can be done to lure the bidders and which technologies could be useful."
