About 15 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers met trustee Rajendra Singh of Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College in Ghatkopar and submitted a written memorandum asking them to refund the ex-students deposit money with immediate effect.
Following MiD DAY's report ('College pockets Rs 45 lakh in refundable deposits: RTI', Nov 28), MNS chief Raj Thackeray ordered his party members from the Ghatkopar wing to look into the issue.
After the MNS delegation, comprising Dr Ved Tiwari and Ghatkopar division chief Sandesh More, met the college authorities, it didn't take long for the authorities to succumb to the pressure and agree to do the needful. The college gave a written assurance promising to return deposit monies of students of past three years.
"We warned Singh [trustee] that if he failed to refund the money, the party would deal with him. Subsequently, the college authorities gave us in writing that they will reimburse the money at the earliest," said Tiwari.
RTI effect
RTI activist and former student of the college Sudhir Singh had filed an RTI, in August this year, querying details regarding the depositsu00a0-- Rs 250 Library, Rs 400 Laboratory and Rs 150 caution moneyu00a0-- that the students had paid at the time of admission to the college. A week later, the RTI revealed that the management had reimbursed money to all those students, who had asked for a refund. They also presented a list of 14,000 students who had paid deposits to the college. According to Sudhir, however, more than 30 per cent of the students did not receive their dues, which means that the college had pocketed approximately Rs 45 lakh over a decade.u00a0u00a0
