The latest bakery to set up shop in Andheri, Cakebread, has a neat, cosy feel. The little bakery has a pink and brown décor and a bright chandelier at the entrance. Different varieties of cakes and pastries on the shelves looked inviting, while the aroma of freshly-baked bread filled the air. While we ordered a Chocolate Croissant to devour at the bakery, there were a number of other items on the menu we wanted to taste, so we asked for them to be delivered home. Here is our pick of the lot:

Muffins (R45): Sprinkled with chocolate chips, the Chocolate Chip Muffin was a treat for the senses. Neither too sweet, nor too bitter, the muffin melted in our mouth. We recommend this little piece of heaven to every chocolate lover. As for the Blueberry Muffin, a little surprise lay on  the middle — a thin layer of delicious blueberry jam. We give it extra brownie points just for that! The muffin itself was soft and crumbly, just how it should be.

Garlic rusk (R60): There’s a certain comfort in sitting with a cup of hot tea and biting into a crunchy garlic rusk. And if it’s a rusk like this one, we don’t mind downing some cups of tea, too. Crunchy, buttery and garlicky, these little pieces of rusk were right up our alley.

Carrot cake loaf (R150): The carrot cake was light, spongy, and bursting with the flavour of cinnamon without overpowering the taste of carrot, which made its presence felt in finely-shredded bits. Bug’s Bunny wouldn’t be able to resist this one. Not too sweet, this one would go well with a piping cup of hot chocolate on a rainy day.

Swiss truffle eggless slice (R70): In spite of storing the cake slice all day in the refrigerator, we’re happy to reveal that the pastry was moist and tasted fresh and delicious. The creamy chocolate truffle on and
inside the pastry was the highlight.

Banana cupcake (R45): A Banana Cupcake is one of those things that you either get right or very wrong. It was thankfully, the former in this case. Walnuts crunched in our mouth as we bit into it. The taste of banana was enhanced with the hint of cinnamon. An irresistible combination.
