Education board compiling handbook with traffic police help
Nearly 30,000 students from Std V to Std VII in civic-run schools will soon be given lessons on traffic literacy. In a month’s time, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) education board with the help of traffic police officials will be launching a special handbook comprising notes on basic traffic rules and safety for the students.
The handbook is said to be in its final stage of completion.u00a0The education board has decided to introduce this project in private schools as well and about five lakh students are expected to benefit from it.

“This will not get treated as an additional subject, but as value addition and an awareness drive for school children. We recently conducted special workshops for 600 teachers to sensitise them about the subject,” Education Board Chairperson Pradeep Dhumal said.
Shirish Fadtare, a member of the education board, said the handbook contains vital information related to traffic, including signs and importance of obeying traffic signals.
“The handbook is almost ready. Once we get the final approval from the RTO and the traffic police, in a month’s time students will receive it,” Fadtare said.
In the first phase, the handbook will be distributed to students from 309 civic-run schools. “Once the drive becomes successful with students in PMC schools, we’ll introduce it in private schools as well,” Deputy Education Head Shubhangi Chavhan said.
Chavan is working as the project coordinator. “We have made a budgetary provision of Rs 10 lakh for printing purposes. There will be no additional printing cost as the order will be completed at the PMC’s press,” Dhumal said.
Five lakh copies of the handbook will be printed initially. Apart from hard copies, education board is making study material available through e-learning method as well.
“Besides the handbook, we have developed a special CD using popular tracks to spread awareness,” Chavhan said.
