Virender Sehwag hails decision to name gate after him even as DDCA goofs up

The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) isn't known to keep players on top of their priority list. Yesterday, for a change, was different when the Gate No. 2 at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium in the Capital was named after former India opener Virender Sehwag. Though, again the association's good intentions became a laughing stock after an honour board which had Sehwag's international record placed on the gate mentioned him as the 'only Indian to score a triple century in Test cricket'. Whoever approved it forgot about Karun Nair. The Karnataka batsman, earlier this year, scored a Test triple ton against England and became the second Indian to do so. Nair, ironically till the last IPL was also part of the Delhi Daredevils squad.

Regarding the goof-up, no one from the DDCA seemed to take the responsibility. This isn't the first time a mistake like this has happened at the DDCA. The previous occasion too involved honouring Sehwag. In 2015, the BCCI had to present a memento to the batsman for his services to the game and his entire family was invited during the Test match against South Africa. However, the DDCA officials were embarrassed by the then BCCI president Anurag Thakur when he saw that the seats where the Sehwags were seated had thick layers of dust.

In a small ceremony organised by the DDCA, the gate from where the teams enter the stadium was named after the swashbuckling batsman. Sehwag, who announced his retirement from international cricket two years ago, was present on the occasion along with his two sons, childhood coach AN Sharma and many other former cricketers, who had represented India and Delhi. Life did come full circle for Sehwag, who is the first cricketer from Delhi to have a part of the stadium named after him. It can be recalled that two years ago Sehwag reportedly requested the BCCI to give him a farewell match on his home turf, but that wasn't to be. Nonetheless, Sehwag hailed DDCA's gesture for naming a gate after him. "Today we have a gate named after a cricketer, but later we can have dressing room, stands and other things named after cricketers. It's a positive move from the DDCA," said Sehwag, who hopes that this move could inspire Delhi's young cricketers.
