Empowering Married Women: A Conversation with Barkha Nangia, Founder of Glamour Gurgaon

Barkha Nangia

In contemporary society, the achievements of married women are being celebrated as never before. The antiquated notion that marriage marks the conclusion of a woman's professional aspirations has been thoroughly debunked. Today, women are emerging as the protagonists of their own narratives, shattering stereotypes and inspiring others with their triumphs.

The India beauty and personal care market size reached US$ 28.0 Billion in 2023. According to Market Research, the market is expected to reach US$ 46.6 Billion by 2032, exhibiting a growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6% during 2024-2032. Beauty Pageants are also an imperative part of the Beauty Industry and today we see more participation from women worldwide.

Once such pageant that is for married-women is Glamour Gurgaon. A prominent figure in this paradigm shift is the founder of Glamour Gurgaon, Barkha Nangia. As a distinguished entrepreneur, she has played a pivotal role in this transformation by founding Glamour Gurgaon, a premier fashion event organization. This initiative provides a formidable platform for married women, enabling them to cultivate self-assurance and establish a distinctive identity.

How did Glamour Gurgaon come about? What was your inspiration?
In today's dynamic world, married women are increasingly venturing beyond their domestic spheres to forge professional careers. Recognizing and supporting this transformative movement became my aspiration. Traditionally, a woman's professional ambitions were often side-lined upon marriage. However, contemporary women are defying these conventions, and I sought to contribute to this positive evolution. Thus, Glamour Gurgaon was founded 12 years ago to provide married women with a platform to exhibit their talent and resilience, and to celebrate their remarkable journeys. The company has long been dedicated to empowering married women, offering them the opportunity to shine and thrive in their respective fields. Today I can proudly say that via Glamour Gurgaon we have impacted the lives of more than 7 Lakh Women till now, and even after participation on the show they have been able to carve a niche for themselves in the relevant industry.

What kind of events does Glamour Gurgaon organize?
Glamour Gurgaon orchestrates a diverse array of events, including beauty pageants, fashion shows, award ceremonies, and more. Among our most successful pageants are Mrs. Delhi NCR, Mrs. India – Pride of Nation, Ms. India Curvy – The Plus Size Show, and Mrs. Punjab Pride of Nation. These events transcend mere displays of beauty and talent; they encapsulate the essence and spirit of every woman. Through these platforms, we endeavour to highlight the courage and strength inherent in women, celebrating their achievements across a multitude of fields.

What do you enjoy most about running Glamour Gurgaon?
One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is observing the remarkable transformation in the women who participate. As they step onto the stage, their newfound confidence and self-belief are palpable. It is a privilege to celebrate their journeys and witness their evolution first-hand. At Glamour Gurgaon, our goal is to empower women, enabling them to transcend societal boundaries and explore new horizons.

Who has been a major influence in your career?
Throughout my endeavours, my family has constituted an unwavering source of support, with my husband proving to be a particularly auspicious influence. Their constant encouragement has served as a linchpin in my odyssey, ultimately enabling the fruition of my long-held dreams and aspirations.

How do you see the pageantry industry evolving?
The pageantry industry is evolving to be more inclusive, focusing on personality and skills rather than just physical beauty. We are moving towards a broader definition of beauty, one that recognizes the unique qualities each person brings. In the future, I see this platform expanding even further, welcoming both men and women and continuing to break traditional norms.

Do you have a role model or a source of inspiration?
Yes, my inspiration comes from every woman I have encountered in my life. Their stories and experiences motivate me to push myself further and create opportunities for all women around me.

The ascendancy of Glamour Gurgaon is undeniably captivating. Could you illuminate us on some pivotal junctures or individuals who have profoundly shaped this trajectory?
Glamour Gurgaon's ascent owes much to the extraordinary individuals who have graced our platform. Consider, for instance, Mayanka Sharma Patel, whose transition from a runway luminary to a prominent actor subsequent to her triumph as Mrs. India Pride of Nation 2017 embodies the transformative essence of our initiatives. Similarly, Namrata Senani Garg, emerging as Mrs. Delhi NCR 2017, has since become a prominent fixture in over 400 advertisements, showcasing the myriad opportunities Glamour Gurgaon offers. And let us not overlook Rashika Matharu, whose foray into the realm of acting followed her coronation as Mrs. Delhi NCR Ravishing 2022. These luminaries epitomize the resilience and prowess that resonate within our community, serving as enduring sources of inspiration for countless others.

Is there a quote or a motto that motivates you?
I find inspiration in the quote from the movie Creed: “One step, one punch, one round at a time.” It reminds me to take each day as it comes and to keep moving forward.

What other initiatives is Glamour Gurgaon involved in?
We are actively engaged in raising awareness about breast cancer, steadfast in our commitment to this cause. Even amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, we have diligently organized events aimed at encouraging women to transcend their comfort zones and excel professionally. Our endeavors extend to celebrating the achievements of Indian women on a global scale, empowering them to realize their aspirations through transformative experiences that foster confidence and unlock new opportunities. In our ongoing efforts, we have been conducting free breast cancer checkup camps for the past decade. Collaborating with hospitals, we reach out to underprivileged communities and those residing in slums, striving to instill awareness and promote early detection among all strata of society

What are your future plans for Glamour Gurgaon?
Our ambition knows no bounds as we strive to chart new territories. Glamour Gurgaon envisions itself as India's preeminent and most esteemed pageantry organization within the coming decade. Our aspiration is to extend our reach to women from every echelon of the industry, transcending geographical barriers. As part of our strategic blueprint, we are dedicated to cultivating an abundance of opportunities for all women aspiring to partake in the realms of fashion and entertainment. Today my profile involves being a Pageant Director, Brand Promoter, Grooming Expert and even a motivational speaker. And lately I have launched my own cosmetics line 11:11 Cosmetics.
