On World Health Day, mid-day sat down with celebrity nutritionist Kinita Kadakia Patel for an exclusive conversation about the importance of regulating one's metabolism. She also shared insights into her process of helping celebrities achieve fat loss and debunked popular diet myths.
Kinita is a metabolic reset and body transformation specialist. Explaining her approach, she said, "Metabolism is associated with our lifestyle, and many clinical issues, such as insulin resistance and blood pressure, are a result of poor lifestyle choices. If one can reset themselves with better eating, regular sleep, consistency in training, etc, a significant shift can be achieved towards a better metabolism. Hence, I use the approach of ‘metabolic reset’ with my clients where weight loss is achieved by not just ‘dieting’ but by ‘fixing’ their entire lifestyle."
Kinita Kadakia Patel explains her 'no sugar' approach
Kinita is a staunch advocate for completely cutting out sugar from one's life. Expanding on the risks of consuming sugar, she stated, "Sugar is that one food which can single-handedly disrupt your body’s metabolism. Sugar intake can result in everything that is unwanted, such as fat gain, metabolic diseases, poor skin, gut issues, and much more. Frequent sugar intake can also spike blood sugar levels, leading to crashes, cravings, and a slower metabolism over time. Sugar is a trap, a viscous cycle that must be broken as soon as possible."
Extolling the benefits of a no-sugar lifestyle, she said, "When clients reduce or eliminate their sugar intake, they get clear skin and feel more stable, energetic, alert and much more in control of their hunger. They also feel a sense of satisfaction after getting rid of their sugar addiction successfully. However, it is important to make this shift gradually so it feels sustainable rather than restrictive," she cautioned.
Busting nutrition myths
Talking about how loss becomes more challenging for women due to the added influence of hormones, Kinita pointed out that "sometimes women become targets for unsustainable weight loss tricks. Many women unknowingly start skipping meals, follow extreme dieting, fast for long hours, completely cut carbs, rely only on cardio, etc. All of this affects their metabolism and puts them in a never-ending loop of muscle loss and fat gain."
"Fasting or undereating affects muscle gain, hampers overall recovery and makes body transformation very difficult. Additionally, carbohydrates are energy-giving, but it’s the type and quantity of carbohydrate that matters. If one selects wisely, they can actually help with fat loss and muscle gain."
She also wanted to stress that no single type of dietary preference can be considered wrong or restrictive. She gave the example of Genelia D'Souza, whom she has been working with for the past few years and who successfully follows a vegan diet.
"'Being vegan can get restrictive’ is another myth that must be debunked. One just needs to be a responsible vegan and make sure that the basic macronutrients are well distributed throughout the meals, and if there is an additional need for supplementation, it must be added to balance it out."
Most challenging celebrity assignments
Kinita has helped several high-profile celebrity clients achieve a sustainable body transformation. When asked about which celebrity she helped achieve the most dramatic transformation, she named Huma Qureshi. "That would be Huma for her show, Fit Fab & Feast. It was a super fun show where she not only needed to train her best but also eat right to get that transformed look and maintain it throughout the duration of her shoot."
Citing another example, where she helped an actress bounce back post-pregnancy, she recalled, "Shweta Tiwari came to me post the delivery of her son, Reyansh, and her struggles were real. She needed to achieve weight loss, which we successfully did. However, a few years after that, she decided to participate in Khatron Ke Khiladi. At that point, we needed to transform her body from being thin to being super-fit, and she absolutely nailed it. I personally feel the hard work she put in paid off in so many ways, which made the entire process super satisfying and a successful one."
