06 March,2026 10:45 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentRapper Badshah has landed in controversy after his recently released Haryanvi song Tateeree drew objections over its lyrics. The Haryana State Commission for Women has issued a summons to the singer, asking him to appear before the commission and explain the content of the track. The song, which was released earlier this week, quickly gained attention online but also sparked criticism from several groups who claimed that some of the lyrics were objectionable and inappropriate. The commission took note of the matter and raised concerns that such content could negatively influence audiences, particularly women and younger listeners. Haryana commission sends legal notice According to reports, the commission acted after receiving complaints about the song’s lyrics and certain visuals featured in its music video. Some complainants argued that the language used in the song was disrespectful and promoted problematic ideas about women. These complaints led the commission to seek clarification from the rapper regarding the intention behind the lyrics. One particular line from the song reportedly triggered strong reactions from those who felt that it used offensive language. Critics claimed that the wording could be seen as degrading and inappropriate, prompting them to demand action from authorities. The commission subsequently decided to intervene and examine the matter more closely. Apart from the lyrics, certain scenes in the music video have also drawn attention. The visuals reportedly show young girls in school uniforms dancing on a public bus while throwing their school bags aside. Some complainants argued that the depiction was unsuitable and sent the wrong message to young viewers. All about the controversy Following these complaints, the commission issued a formal notice asking Badshah to present his response and clarify the concerns raised against the song. He has been asked to appear before the panel on March 13 and explain his stance on the matter. 06 March,2026 05:28 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe film Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, gave one of the most promising young actors, Pratibha Rannta, a role of a lifetime and served as the stepping stone to her cinematic career. For her, however, finding a project that could match the impact of Laapataa Ladies wasn’t easy. After appearing in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Pratibha explores another gripping genre with Accused, a Netflix original directed by Anubhuti Kashyap. Pratibha Rannta on life after Laapataa Ladies “There was so much love coming in. My debut raised so many standards. I kept wondering if I would ever be able to do something that could achieve what Laapataa Ladies did,” she says. Pratibha admits that the period following the film’s release was confusing, as she read several scripts but struggled to find the right one until Accused came her way. “Oh my God, I think I can finally see myself in this space,” she recalls. She adds that the shooting experience was equally refreshing. “There was silence on set. Nobody was shouting, and it was so rare to see that.” People said it was a big risk: Pratibha In Accused, Rannta plays one half of a lesbian couple whose relationship is tested after one of them faces an accusation of sexual harassment at the workplace. Taking on such an unconventional role meant facing doubts from some people around her. “So many people asked, ‘Are you sure you want to do a film like this? It’s a big risk.’ But I wanted to give it a shot and step into a space where I could differentiate myself as an artiste. I didn’t want to repeat myself. It felt right,” she says. Pratibha also shares screen space for the first time with Konkona SenSharma, who is known for making thoughtful choices and portraying layered characters. Recalling her experience working with Sharma, Pratibha says, “I remember being nervous to meet her. She gave me so much space as an artiste to perform, and that helped me. After pack-up, she would suggest we go for a walk. I think that helped us understand each other better and build comfort, which eventually showed on screen. A secure actor always makes sure that the co-actor also feels safe.” Speaking about the film, Pratibha says it explores the complexities of human relationships. “When you love someone, you give them the benefit of doubt. It’s not easy to instantly believe they could do something wrong,” she explains. “You don’t want to give up on them—you want to stay until the very end.” After Accused, Pratibha Rannta will next be seen in The Revolutionaries, a series directed by Nikkhil Advani for Amazon Prime Video.
06 March,2026 04:56 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentCharak: Fair of Faith, directed by Shieladitya Moulik and produced by Sudipto Sen, attempts to shine a light on the darker side of superstition and blind belief. Set in a small village preparing for the annual Charak festival, the film slowly builds a tense atmosphere where faith, fear, and desperation begin to blur the line between devotion and danger. The story begins with the shocking death of a young boy just days before the Charak fair. What first appears to be a tragic incident soon starts raising troubling questions. As the investigation unfolds, whispers begin to spread through the village about a disturbing belief, that childless couples can be blessed with a child through ritual sacrifice carried out with the help of occult practitioners. Whether this horrifying belief is connected to the boy’s death becomes the central mystery that drives the narrative forward. What works for the film Rather than turning into a fast-paced thriller, the film takes a more patient approach. It allows the tension to build slowly, giving viewers time to absorb the unsettling world it creates. The quiet rural setting plays an important role here. The scenic landscapes and peaceful surroundings create a strange contrast with the dark events unfolding in the village, making the story feel even more disturbing. One of the film’s most striking aspects is the portrayal of the Charak festival rituals. These sequences are intense and sometimes uncomfortable to watch, showing devotees performing extreme acts of devotion such as body piercings and physically demanding rituals. The scenes feel raw and realistic, almost like a documentary, which adds to the film’s haunting tone. Performances and characters The performances also help the film stay grounded. Anjali Patil and Sahidur Rahaman bring emotional depth as a couple dealing with the pain of infertility, portraying their vulnerability and inner conflict with sincerity. Subrat Dutta and Shashi Bhushan also deliver solid performances, representing villagers who are torn between tradition and the fear of questioning long-held beliefs. At times, the film’s slow pace may test the patience of some viewers, but it also allows the story to develop its unsettling mood. Charak ultimately leaves the audience with uncomfortable questions about how easily faith can turn into fanaticism. It may not be an easy watch, but the film succeeds in delivering a thought-provoking and chilling look at the dangers of blind belief.
