Bollywood hangover
We took a 20-day holiday to Europe in early January. Switzerland was high on our priority list as we have always seen its beauty in films. There's much to explore in the Alpine nationu00a0-- its musuems, architecture and lovely countryside. While in Switzerland, we visited all the romantic spots shown in Yash Chopra's films, especially parts of Bern and Zurich that were highlighted in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
Zurich trails
Zurich is a fascinating city that blends both the old and the new in a seamless manner. Walking on the narrow winding streets takes you down the city's 2000- year-old history. The city area is full ofu00a0 trendy cafes, international boutiques and pubs.
The weather, though obviously freezing cold, was amazing. After all, winter's the time to visit the place. I would recommend taking a boat trip by a steamer on Lake Zurich. The cuisine varies across regions, but you'll find excellent restaurants offering French, German and Italian cuisine.
Unforgettable memory
One of the most unforgettable experiences was when we hired a car and drove around the smaller towns and villages, which you can't do when you are travelling by the Euro-rail. We would recommend a road trip, as we got to see many beautiful places that people mostly tend to miss out. I loved staying in all the modest and romantic motels in the small towns. We remember staying in this small hotel that had a breathtaking view of a beautiful lake and the Alps beyond it.
Don't miss it
We took Switzerland's Glacier Express train through the Alps and some of Switzerland's most scenic vistas. The Swiss National Park hosts a variety of animals and plant species. The 23 km long Aletsch Glacier is the longest in the Alps and is a UNESCO World Heritage sight. We did a bit of skiing as part of our glacier experience.
