Almost five years after actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging at his Mumbai home, the CBI filed a closure report on its probe into his death, calling it a “simple case of suicide” in March this year. After SSR’s death, his father alleged that Rhea Chakraborty misappropriated his funds and played a major role in his suicide. While she was given a clean chit a few months back, his family has now challenged the closure report, calling it flimsy.

SSR’s family challenges closure report

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in its closure report on Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, stated that there is no evidence to suggest that Rhea Chakraborty illegally confined, threatened, or abetted him to commit suicide, nor that she misappropriated his funds or possessions.

Reacting strongly, Sushant’s family called the CBI’s findings incomplete and misleading. Their lawyer, Advocate Varun Singh, said, “This is nothing but an eyewash. If CBI really wanted to come out with the truth, it would have submitted all the supporting case documents, including chats, technical records, statements of witnesses, medical records, etc. We will file a protest petition against this closure report, which is based on a shoddy investigation."

SSR’s family calls report ‘flimsy’

The federal anti-corruption probe agency filed two closure reports in March this year. One pertained to a case registered by Sushant Singh’s father, K.K. Singh, in Patna, alleging that Rhea and her family drove his son to suicide and misappropriated his funds. The other involved a case filed by Rhea against Singh’s sisters in Mumbai.

“Investigation revealed that Sushant had committed suicide. None of the accused persons had lived or stayed with him between June 8, 2020, and June 14, 2020 (the day he was found hanging in his Bandra flat). Rhea and her brother Showik left the house on June 8 and thereafter didn’t visit it. Sushant had spoken to Showik in June, but had no conversations with Rhea between June 8 and June 14. Furthermore, Meetu Singh (Sushant’s sister) had stayed with him in his flat from June 8 to June 12,” said an officer, quoting details of the closure report.

The agency found that Sushant’s finances were managed by his chartered accountant and lawyer, who maintained full oversight. It also concluded that expenses related to Rhea, including their 2019 Europe trip, were legitimate and voluntary.

Reacting to this claim, Sushant’s family lawyer, Advocate Varun Singh, said, “Simply saying Sushant Singh’s account has not been used to withdraw funds is not enough. CBI should have provided the bank statements to back its claim. It’s a flimsy report, which won’t stand in a court of law.”

A Patna court will next hear the closure report matter on December 20 this year.
