Vaani Kapoor opens up on playing a cop in Mandala Murders

Opportunities like her upcoming OTT series Mandala Murders don't come often and it is beautiful to see women leading the thriller genre, says Vaani Kapoor. The upcoming mythological crime-thriller is produced by YRF Entertainment and directed by Gopi Puthran of "Mardaani 2" fame and Manan Rawat. "I love emotional, human complexities. I play a cop in the show, and it's beautiful to see women in the thriller genre. Usually, in this genre, women are often shown as tough and with a straight face, very alpha, but I like that they've also played with her vulnerability and made her more human-like," Kapoor told PTI in an interview. "I like that balance, and that was exciting for me," the actor, who has previously dazzled audiences with her glamorous roles in Shudh Desi Romance, War, Bell Bottom, Khel Khel Mein, and Raid 2, she added. Set in the mysterious town of Charandaspur, Mandala Muders will see Kapoor as a no-nonsense investigative officer, Rhea Thomas, who unravels a chilling conspiracy of ritualistic killings tied to a centuries-old secret society. "It's (this kind of acting offer) not come that often to me. This was my first time when something like this happened to me. I keep waiting on, which is why I am so selective, which is why I do less work. I keep hoping that whatever is coming to me, I'm able to pick the best out of the lot. It's not like I get all the brilliant roles that I want to be part of, and this I lucked out with (show)," Kapoor said. Having long admired Hollywood female-led action films such as Naked Weapon, Charlie's Angels, and Kill Bill, Kapoor said it is not easy to do action. "There is tremendous effort and work that goes behind it. This (show) is not very high-octane action, but it's more closer to the realism of the story, and through the story we've done it (action). Hats off and kudos to everybody who does action on screen, even the men," the actor, who lauds Katrina Kaif as an action star, said. "It's not easy, they have to work hard on their body, their fitness, it's exhausting because physically, mentally and emotionally you're drained, and it's not like you're not acting while you're performing. There are shots of your reactions with that intensity, but it's all fun. I enjoyed it," she added. "Mandala Murders" also features Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Surveen Chawla, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Siddhanth Kapoor, Rahul Bagga, Raghubir Yadav, and Monica Choudhary in pivotal roles, and will premiere on July 25 on Netflix. Mouni Roy calls Salakaar a career challenging experience

Actress Mouni Roy has talked about her upcoming spy thriller project Salakaar, and said that what struck her the most was the script’s ability to weave political suspense with very personal, intimate moments. Mouni shared, "Joining Salakaar was an opportunity to explore a world unlike any I’ve stepped into before. The narrative’s intensity and emotional layers demanded that I push myself to new heights as an artist.” She added: “What struck me most was the script’s ability to weave political suspense with very personal, intimate moments. Every scene required careful attention to nuance and depth, which made the experience deeply rewarding.” Directed by Faruk Kabir and Produced by Sphereorigins and Mahir Films, Salakaar is a gripping espionage thriller, which is slated to release on August 8. She added: “The camaraderie on set and the shared vision of the team made this journey unforgettable. I’m excited for the audience to see a side of me they haven’t seen before and to be a part of a story that is as thrilling as it is meaningful.” The makers on Monday unveiled the teaser, which is set across two timelines - 1978 and 2025. Salakaar follows the story of an Indian spy and sets the stage for an intense drama, where old enemies resurface, and the past threatens to destroy the present. The series is a blend of history and suspense, making intelligence its biggest arsenal. It also stars Naveen Kasturia, Mouni Roy, Mukesh Rishi and Surya Sharma. Inspired by real events, Salakaar is a story of a decorated spymaster who, driven by sheer mettle and crucial intelligence, successfully disarms enemy forces to safeguard national security as he discovers the existence of a top secret nuclear facility in Pakistan. Faruk Kabir, director and co-writer, said: “Salakaar is an intense spy thriller with a deeply emotional core - it is the legend of an extraordinary Indian spy. It’s not about action for the sake of spectacle; it’s about intelligence as strategy and silence as sacrifice.” “It was an incredible experience working with Naveen, Mukesh ji and Mouni - they did absolute justice to their characters and added so much to each character. This series is my tribute to the unsung minds who fought not only with bullets, but with brilliance,” Kabir added. Naveen Kasturia said that Salakaar was an immense challenge, pushing me in unprecedented ways. “Character-wise, portraying an individual of such astuteness and constant alertness, while living with the imminent danger of being an undercover operative in a foreign land, was a unique experience. One misstep could mean capture or worse.” “Physically, it was my first foray into action, making it incredibly demanding. It was Faruk Kabir's passionate vision that truly guided me through this transformative role.” Mukesh Rishi added that Salakaar is a spy thriller unlike any he has come across. “It’s a project that values intellect as much as intensity where the real power lies in strategy, silence, and sacrifice. When I first read the script, I was struck by the authenticity of its world and the depth of its characters.” Mukesh said that the director Faruk Kabir has created something truly compelling, grounded in reality, yet cinematic in vision. “Collaborating with such a committed cast and crew made the experience even more fulfilling. This is the kind of story that stays with you because it’s not just about what happens, but why it happens, and at what cost.” Salakaar streaming from August 8 on JioHotstar. Still from Rangeen

Rangeen trailer: Viineet Kumar Siingh gets into revenge mode in this drama

Prime Video today dropped an intriguing trailer for its upcoming Original Series, Rangeen. Produced by Kabir Khan and Rajan Kapoor, the series is created and written by Amardeep Galsin and Amir Rizvi, and directed by Kopal Naithani and Pranjal Dua.  Blending humour with emotion, Rangeen navigates through the tangled threads of relationships, trust, and personal awakening. The series is brought to life by a stellar cast including  Viineet Kumar Siingh, Rajshri Deshpande, Taaruk Raina, and Sheeba Chaddha  in lead roles.  Rangeen trailer The trailer of Rangeen offers a hilarious glimpse into the chaos that unfolds in Adarsh’s seemingly simple life. What begins as the shocking discovery of his wife Naina’s betrayal quickly spirals into a wildly unpredictable journey. In a bold exploration of morality, identity, and tangled emotions, Rangeen follows Adarsh – a mild-mannered, middle-aged man – as he embarks on a hilarious yet heart-wrenching quest for revenge. Stylish yet chaotic, funny yet deeply human, the series promises a delicious blend of humour and relationship drama, with punchy dialogues, quirky characters, and a storyline that’s anything but ordinary.  Story came from a news article Amardeep Galsin, co-creator and co-writer, added, “Rangeen is a sensitive yet humorous story that explores what intimacy, power, and emotional need look like when you're not in a rom-com. We wanted to build a world that worked as a satire - one that walks the tightrope between wit, irony and emotional honesty. This wasn't an easy story to tell, but working with producers Kabir Khan and Rajan Kapoor, who showed unwavering faith in our vision, directors Kopal Naithani and Pranjal Dua, and phenomenal artists including Vineet, Rajshri, Taaruk and Sheeba ji, helped bring Rangeen alive with all its awkwardness, depth and rawness intact.” Amir Rizvi, co-creator and co-writer of the series, talking about inspiration behind Rangeen, shared, “Rangeen came from a news article that just stuck with us, not so much for what it said, but for what it stirred. It opened a door into a world few talk about, and that became the starting point. What began as something quirky quickly unfolded into a story that’s layered, emotional, and surprisingly relatable. Rangeen is about the lives we lead beneath the surface - identities we guard and the choices we justify. Collaborating with Prime Video to bring this to audiences across India and 240 countries has been an incredible experience. We’ve tried to tell a bold story with humour, care, and empathy.” Viineet Kumar Siingh on playing Adarsh Talking about what made him say yes to playing Adarsh, the lead character in Rangeen, Viineet Kumar Siingh shared, "Adarsh is a character that felt instantly human to me—flawed, conflicted, yet deeply sincere. What excited me most about Rangeen was the chance to portray someone navigating a storm of betrayal and self-doubt, not with melodrama, but with restraint, humour, and quiet intensity. There’s a raw honesty in the way the story unfolds, and that’s what makes it both entertaining and emotionally resonant. Collaborating with Prime Video and Kabir Khan has been an immensely fulfilling experience—they’ve created a space where unique, grounded stories like Rangeen can flourish. Also, the writers Amir Rizvi and Amardeep Galsin wrote it very well and they are the show runners too. I can’t wait for audiences across India and the world to meet Adarsh and take this journey with him, when the series premieres on July 25." Rajshri Deshpande on playing Naina Rajshri Deshpande, who plays the character of Naina, the female lead in the series, shared, “Rangeen isn’t just a twisted relationship drama, it’s a mirror to the complexities we carry in our hearts and minds. What drew me to Naina was her unapologetic hunger - for desire, for meaning, for something beyond the boxes she’s been put into. What I love is that Rangeen doesn’t hand out easy answers. It doesn’t reduce women to labels - it lets them be messy, searching, and painfully human. Amir and Amardeep brought a fearless and deeply sensitive lens to this world. Our conversations gave me the space to be Naina, not just play her. Working with Prime Video, and having Kabir Khan backing this, made the ride even more meaningful. When Rangeen drops this July, I hope people don’t just watch it - I hope they feel seen.”

(Centre) Pankaj Jha in Panchayat

Panchayat actor Pankaj Jha reveals how he is detached from fame

With a recurring role in three seasons of Panchayat, actor Pankaj Jha aka the sharp-tongued Vidhayakji has become a recognised face. But the actor is refreshingly detached from the fame the popular dramedy has brought him. “I don’t belong to any industry,” he says, before adding, “I live in Pune. I paint, I write poetry; acting is just a part of my life. I recently had a successful solo art show at Jehangir Art Gallery. That is also part of my expression.” The actor views Panchayat — led by Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, and Raghubir Yadav — as another avenue of creative expression. The fame is a byproduct. “People on the street may recognise me, but that doesn’t mean I feel famous. For me, success is being in the moment. Most people keep recycling their past achievements to feel worthy,” he shares. Jha has over 50 films to his credit, including Monsoon Wedding (2001), Company (2002), Black Friday (2004), and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005). But acting, to him, has never been about visibility or strategising to build a robust career. “I don’t manage projects. I simply respond to energy,” he says. That’s how he chose his latest film, Sarpanch Sahab. He shares, “When I met Shahid Khan, the director, his sincerity and honesty drew me in.” In an industry where advertising one’s work comes a close second to the craft, he doesn’t believe in promoting his work. “If your work speaks, why should you? If it doesn’t, then no amount of talking will help,” he smiles.

Still from Rematch

Rematch series review: Christian Cook-starrer is tense, engaging sports thriller

Web Series: RematchCast: Christian Cook, Sarah Bolger , Tom Austen, Orion Lee, Aidan Quinn, Luke Pasqualino, Molly Harris, Trine DrynholmDirector/Creator: Yan EnglandRating: 3/5Runtime: 40-50min/ 6 Eps Rematch is a fairly gripping six-episode psychological drama that fictitiously reimagines the legendary true life, 1997 showdown between world chess champion Garry Kasparov and IBM’s chess-playing supercomputer Deep Blue. Largely set in New York, where the intense, highly competitive and mind-bending games of chess, which also involved one-upmanship, strategy and gaming the opponent, were played, the series explores the toll on Kasparov (Christian Cooke) as he tries to beat machine intelligence to reiterate the intellectual superiority of mankind. Will he succeed? Garry Kasparov, the most famous chess grandmaster ever, challenged the old Soviet regime, emerged as one of Putin’s most prominent critics and stood against totalitarian regimes. He was also chairman of the Human Rights Foundation. Kasparov’s victory over Karpov, as shown in flashbacks in this series, was a victory for the free world over the Soviet regime. Kasparov considered his 1989 victory over Deep Thought to be an experiment of sorts, but ambitious IBM exec Helen Brock, recognizing the opportunity to promote the brand and the stock price, manages to sell the idea to him. His mother Klara Kasparova though, questioned his reason for agreeing to a rematch. IBM’s gamesmanship during the rematch also echoed the mind-games that the KGB and elite members of the regime tried to pull ten years earlier. Creators Yan England, Bruno Nahon, and Andre Gulluni build up tension and interest by making the human angle important and adding fractured/estranged relationships to the saga. Elite Australian sports agent Roger Laver is also there to negotiate with IBM on behalf of Kasparov. The rematch taxed Kasparov in the extreme. He had to confront not only a formidable machine which was being live-programmed with the help of several renowned grand masters, but also the mounting pressure from the media, scientific world and fans at large - which caused his own psyche to unravel. Those who already know the outcome might not be interested in the result but they are sure to get captivated by the way Director/ co-creator Yan England structures this psychologically inclined thriller which involves mind games as well as the game of chess. The series not only dwells on the human cost of competing with artificial intelligence, but also digs into themes of brilliance, self-doubt, and the fear of the unknown bogey of losing worth. In a broader sense the very value of humanity was at stake. The beautifully dramatised series emphasizes Kasparov’s high-strung neurotic mind-set and Cooke truly immerses himself as the tightly wound grand master. Aidan Quinn as Laver, Orion Lee as P. C. the man who created Deep Blue and Tom Austen as Nelson do finely tuned justice to their roles. This rematch kick-started the man versus machine debate and is recognised as a defining moment in the evolution of machines. The debate continues on with AI taking centre stage in today’s world.
