Actor-turned-producer Shweta Tripathi emphasises how the Pride movement must go beyond June as she backs queer stories with her maiden play Cock. The Mirzapur actress also noted how the real world is diverse and she feels the need to show it
Shweta Tripathi
Shweta Tripathi’s first theatre production Cock, which tells the story of a queer man, premièred in Delhi on June 6, coinciding with the Pride Month. After hosting multiple shows in Delhi and Mumbai, she is set to take her play to different cities across India. Her idea is simple — promote queer stories, and be a true ally of the LGBTQIA+ community all year round.
“The Pride movement doesn’t end on June 30. If you say you’re an ally, you have to walk the talk every single day. Queer stories are not seasonal, they are human stories that deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated. As an artiste, I feel a responsibility to reflect the real world in my work, and the real world is beautifully diverse,” says the Mirzapur actor. That’s why for her maiden production venture, the actor-turned-producer bet on Cock, which explores themes of love, identity, and sexual fluidity.
Not just that, through her production company AllMyTea, she is set to roll her debut film — a queer love story. Tripathi is certain that in her new role, she wants to be an advocate for inclusive storytelling. She shares, “We’re living in a moment when more and more people are embracing the freedom to live as their authentic selves, and Cock doesn’t shy away from the complexities of that process. These are the stories that provoke thought, build empathy, and maybe even spark change. Pride Month is a time to celebrate, but also to reflect on how far we still have to go when it comes to visibility, inclusion, and acceptance.”
