Jamie Campbell Bower

Transforming Jamie Campbell Bower into the nightmarish Vecna in Stranger Things 5 is a painstaking process that blends traditional makeup artistry with cutting-edge visual effects. Far from being a fully digital character, Vecna is largely created through practical effects, allowing Bower’s performance to remain at the heart of the terrifying transformation.

A look at Bower's transformation

Each shooting day begins extremely early, with the special effects team spending nearly seven hours applying layers of prosthetic makeup to Bower’s face, head, shoulders and hands. The prosthetics are carefully sculpted to resemble exposed muscles, burnt skin and decaying flesh, giving Vecna his raw, organic appearance. Every piece is custom-made and fitted to Bower’s body so that he can move naturally and convey emotion despite the heavy makeup.

To make Vecna appear more imposing, additional padding is added around the shoulders and torso, along with subtle lifts in the footwear to increase Bower’s height. His body is wrapped in a specially designed suit that serves as the base for both physical textures and later digital enhancements. This suit allows the makeup team and VFX artists to work together seamlessly, blending real materials with computer-generated details.

All about the character Vecna

While much of Vecna’s look is achieved practically, CGI plays a crucial role in enhancing the character. Digital effects are used to add creeping vines, pulsating textures and unnatural movements that would be impossible to create physically. These elements are layered over the practical makeup, ensuring the character feels alive and unsettling rather than artificial.

The extensive makeup significantly influences Bower’s performance. Restricted by the weight and texture of the prosthetics, he adopts a slower, more deliberate movement style that adds to Vecna’s menacing presence. Even small details, such as the glossy finish on the skin, are carefully applied to create a wet, disturbing effect under the show’s lighting.

The result is a frighteningly realistic villain brought to life through patience, endurance and collaboration. By combining hours of hands-on makeup work with advanced visual effects, Stranger Things 5 continues to raise the bar for on-screen creature design, making Vecna one of television’s most memorable antagonists.
