Renowned Hindustani classical singer Pandit Channulal Mishra died of age-related ailments at his daughter's home in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur in the early hours of Thursday, October 2. He was 89.
He was admitted to the hospital for the last 17-18 days with age related issues. He passed away at home this morning at around 4 am, his daughter Namrata Mishra told PTI. Mishra's health deteriorated late Wednesday night, and he was admitted to a hospital, where he died during treatment.
Mishra's last rites will be performed in Varanasi at 5 pm.
He is survived by his son, tabla player Ramkumar Mishra, and three daughters. His wife died four years ago.
Mishra was an Indian classical music singer, who hailed from Banaras (modern day Varanasi), and was known to be an exponent of the Banaras gharana with expertise in Hindustani classical music, and known for his speciality in Khayal and Purab Ang tradition of Thumri.
Mishra received music training from his father, Badri Prasad Mishra, as well as Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of Kirana gharana, and Thakur Jaidev Singh.
The classical vocalist was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour, in 2020 by the government for his distinguished contribution to Indian classical music, and Padma Bhushan before that in 2010.
