With looks inspired by iPhone 6, Vivo's X5 Pro is a beauty, but its customised Fun Touch OS doesn't impress, as Hassan M Kamal finds out

Gadget Review: Vivo X5 Pro - Oh beautiful!

Vivo X5 Pro

Rating: 9/10
Design: We have rarely seen anyone go "aww", after seeing a phone. But Vivo's X5 Pro has been getting such compliments. Why wouldn't it? Its slim body, which is thinner (6.4mm) than the iPhone 6 (6.9mm) that it also resembles heavily, is stunning. It gets curved glasses layered on both sides (with Gorilla glass) on top of a stainless steel and aluminum alloy frame. The side rims get a metallic finish and bears a white line on the right edge as seen in the iPhone 6, but here the similarity ends abruptly. The two devices vary in the degrees of curve around the edges and the corners; the X5 Pro has sharper corners and is less smoother around the edges.

Display: The X5 Pro gets a 5.2-inch super AMOLED full HD display with a pixel density of 480ppi. Now, super AMOLED displays offer richer colour and are better in displaying blacks, which gives the X5 Pro an edge over other devices. However, it's prone to smudges. An oleophobic coating could have helped, but we feel it's done purposely to increase the grip as oleophobic screens are also slippery.

Rating: 7/10
Connectivity: The X5 Pro is a dual-sim phone and supports 4G LTE, 3G as well as 2G. Other connectivity modes include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro USB, GPS and OTG. However, Vivo has not disclosed any information of the Bluetooth version or the bands supported by the built-in Wi-Fi chip, which we find a bit misleading.

Rating: 9/10
Camera: The device gets a 13MP rear camera with autofocus and flash and a 5MP front camera (also with autofocus). We found both the cameras upto the mark in both, night as well day light conditions. We also like the native camera app.

Rating: 5/10
Battery: The 2,450 mAh falls short of our expectations as it managed to give only 8.5 hours of battery life in 3G only mode on regular usage.

Rating: 5/10
User interface & OS: The device runs on Fun Touch OS 2.1, a customised version of the Android Lollipop 5.0.2, which offers lot more control on apps, but the settings panel (moved to the bottom) will take time getting used to. However, we didn't like the absence of several crucial features including the option to encrypt your device and check phone status (like battery usage).

Rating: 6/10
Hardware & Performance: The audio playback is impressive, and we found the sound levels during calls and playback up to our satisfaction. But the 16GB internal storage falls short as only 5.8GB is available for data storage. For a device built for Hi-Fi (high-resolution) music fans, it's too little. The storage is expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card, but if you want more storage, you can use only one sim card. The X5 Pro gets 2GB RAM and runs on 1.5GHz 64-bit Qualcomm S615 octa core processor with Adreno 405 graphic processor. The processing power and RAM should have been sufficient, but on several occasions, we found it pushed to its limit (it froze a few times) during multiple-tab browsing along with multiple apps open in the background.
