Sign up for a forest marathon in Durshet to meet your fitness and adventure goals at one go
A moment from a previous edition of the marathon
Monsoons are the best time to explore the Sahyadris of Maharashtra. The hills turn green, and the weather is perfect for adventure lovers to explore new terrain. Here’s another way to take it a notch higher. The Durshet Forest Marathon organised by Run Buddies Races starts from Khopoli which is 80 km away from Mumbai.
Arvind Bijwe, founder of the organisation, shares, “We’ve been conducting the Durshet Forest Marathon for the past 10 years. It started in 2015 with a small but passionate group of trail runners who wanted to break away from city roads, and experience running amidst nature. Since then, it has steadily grown into one of the most loved monsoon marathon events in Maharashtra, with participants coming from Mumbai, Pune, as well as from other states. Every year, we’ve refined the experience while keeping the raw, nature-driven charm of the run intact.”
The marathon received a great response in the previous edition. He recalls, “The route was lush, and refreshingly isolated from traffic. Seasoned half‑marathoners clocked personal‑best trail times, while first‑timers completed their very first five and three km with beaming smiles. Every year, there are more returning faces; families turn it into a weekend getaway. What makes it truly special is the sense of community.”
The marathon welcomes any runner with good fitness levels. Bijwe explains, “We offer four race categories — 21 km, 10 km, 5 km, and 3 km — catering to all age groups and fitness levels. The minimum age varies by distance, and while we don’t require medical certificates, we recommend that participants with medical conditions consult their doctors. Our on-site medical team and ambulances are always on standby.”
The roads are scenic where buildings are replaced by trees and water bodies. “The best part about this marathon is that you’re running alongside the Amba River, past grazing cattle, across old bridges, through monsoon mist, and sometimes, in ankle-deep mud. The rain makes the terrain challenging, but it also adds to the beauty. This is not just about speed — it’s about the soul of running,” he signs off.
Do’s
>> Hydrate well and do not push your body
>> Wear trail‑friendly shoes with grip; the later hills are slippery
>> Inform a volunteer or a fellow runner immediately if you or another runner feels dizzy or gets injured.
>> Carry a light rain jacket or poncho as sudden showers are common
>> Protect your feet; apply Vaseline or anti-chafing cream to prevent blisters
Don’ts
>> Don’t litter
>> Don’t start too fast; save energy for the climbs at 7 km and 18 km
>> Respect villagers’ privacy; smile, and wave, but don’t photograph without permission
>> Do not stray off the marked route; it’s sensitive forest land
>> Don’t overdress as it’s humid; moisture-wicking outfits work best
