A cricket coach was arrested on Monday by the Deonar Police in Mumbai for allegedly sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl during training sessions in Govandi.
According to Deonar Police officials, the incident took place at a ground located in Govandi, which is a sports facility managed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The victim, a resident of Ghatkopar, had been travelling to Govandi for the past several months to receive cricket training from the 40-year-old accused coach.
The matter first surfaced when the victim’s family approached the Pant Nagar police in Ghatkopar on Monday afternoon, where they alleged that the accused sexually abused and assaulted the minor girl, which occurred last week, police said.
“The incident took place during the training session on the sports ground. Since the crime took place in Deonar, we registered a zero FIR and handed the case over to Deonar police immediately,” said an official from the Pant Nagar police station.
As soon as the case was received, Deonar police arrested the accused, identified as Rajendra Nanasaheb Pawar (41), a resident of Govandi.
In her statement to the police, the victim said that the accused had threatened her not to reveal anything, which is why she remained silent and did not inform her parents. However, her unusual behaviour raised suspicion, and after repeated questioning, she eventually disclosed the horrific details to her parents in a state of anxiety.
After the arrest, police discovered that the accused had one prior case registered against him for a similar offence at Deonar police station. It also came to light that during his prime, he had been associated with the Ranji Trophy, police officials revealed.
The accused was sent for a medical examination, and subsequently, the court remanded him to police custody.
