In a major crackdown on Wednesday, the Kharghar Police in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai conducted an operation at Hyde Park in Sector-35 in the Kharghar area, detaining over 100 suspected Bangladeshi nationals, officials said.
They said that the operation has caused a significant stir in the city, with more than 70 women among those detained. It is understood that the action was based on intelligence reports.
A team of police personnel arrived at the Hyde Park Society in Kharghar Sector 35 at around 10:30 am. They conducted a thorough interrogation of the domestic helpers (maids) and other workers employed in the residents' homes.
According to sources, several documents presented by these individuals for identity verification appeared suspicious, police said.
Speaking on the matter, one of the residents of the society, on the condition of anonymity, stated, "Around 10:30 to 11 am, a few police officials came to our society. They questioned the women working as domestic help. Following the preliminary check, they were taken to the police station for further investigation."
The significant number of people detained — over 100 — includes a large number of women. During the initial scrutiny, it was revealed that the Aadhaar cards of almost all those taken into custody are linked to Bangladesh.
The detained individuals were reportedly unable to produce the necessary valid documents (such as visas or passports) required for legal residence in India. Police confirmed that many did not possess any official documents at all. Following this serious revelation, all individuals have been taken to the Kharghar Police Station, where they are undergoing intensive interrogation. The police are thoroughly investigating their purpose for staying in the area and whether they are linked to any illegal activities. This operation signals a heightened 'watch' by the police on illegal residents in Navi Mumbai.
