A 13-year-old girl has emerged as the key witness in the murder of her father, allegedly orchestrated by her own mother and her lover. The victim, 40-year-old Bharat Ahire, had confronted his wife about her extramarital affair. In response, she and her boyfriend allegedly plotted a brutal assault that ultimately led to his death.

Instead of seeking medical help, the wife kept her severely injured husband confined at home for three days. Unable to watch her father suffer, the couple's eldest daughter, a Std VII student, alerted relatives, leading to his hospitalisation. After 24 days of treatment, Bharat succumbed to his injuries on August 5. Initially, the wife claimed her husband had been hurt in a bike accident, but the daughter’s testimony told a different story. She revealed that her mother had stood by while her lover and another man assaulted her father. Based on the girl's account, police arrested the wife and booked her and her boyfriend for murder.

Aarey Colony police have arrested 35-year-old Rajshree Ahire for conspiring with her boyfriend to kill her husband, Bharat Laxman Ahire, a professional makeup artist. The boyfriend, Chandrashekhar Padayachi, and his accomplice, identified as Ranga, are currently absconding. According to police, the murder stemmed from Rajshree’s affair with Chandrashekhar. When Bharat confronted his wife, she accused him of harassment. Bharat then called Chandrashekhar, who asked him to meet near a public toilet in Unit No. 31, Ektanagar, Aarey Colony, Goregaon East. Shockingly, Rajshree accompanied her husband to the meeting spot.

“Around 10 pm on July 15, Chandrashekhar arrived at the location with Ranga. When Bharat questioned him, Chandrashekhar allegedly began punching him in the chest, stomach and other parts of the body. Ranga reportedly held Bharat from behind during the assault,” a police officer said. Despite witnessing the attack, Rajshree did not intervene or seek help. As locals began gathering at the scene, both assailants fled. Instead of taking her husband to the hospital, Rajshree took him home and kept him there without medical attention for three days.

During this period, the couple’s two daughters, aged 13, 5 and son, aged 3, witnessed their father’s deteriorating condition. When he began vomiting blood, the eldest daughter informed relatives. Bharat’s sister-in-law then visited the house, where Rajshree claimed he had been injured in a bike accident. He was finally admitted to a superspeciality hospital in Pathanwadi, Malad East. At the hospital, Rajshree repeated the false claim, and Bharat, under duress, echoed the story out of fear. This version was recorded in the Medico-Legal Case (MLC) report submitted to the police.

However, discrepancies in the account raised suspicion. “We launched an investigation, questioned witnesses, and registered an FIR on July 30 based on Bharat’s statement. As the accused were on the run, we questioned the daughters. That’s when the 13-year-old revealed that she had witnessed the attack from about 20 to 30 metres away. She said her mother watched silently and didn’t intervene. After the assault, instead of taking her husband to a hospital, Rajshree brought him home,” said a senior officer. Further investigation revealed Rajshree was not a passive observer but an active conspirator. Her refusal to intervene or provide medical care established her direct role in the crime.

An officer from Aarey police station added, “Rajshree, who was in a relationship with Chandrashekhar, helped plan the murder.” “All of us are in shock after Bharat’s death. We’ve told the police clearly, even if she is our sister-in-law, she must not be spared. Everyone involved should face the strictest punishment,” said Sanjay Ahire, Bharat’s younger brother and a clerk at the Bombay High Court. Bharat’s family friend and lawyer, Pankaj Jadhav, also demanded stern action.

Senior Inspector Ravindra Patil of Aarey Colony police station said, “The wife has been arrested, and we are working to trace the other two accused.” Initially, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 115(2), 351(2), 117(2) and 3(5). After Bharat’s death during treatment, murder charges were added.
