Freddy D’Mello, a 40-year-old property dealer, was shot by three unidentified assailants near Garuda Petrol Pump in Charkop on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 12.30 pm. D’Mello, a resident of Bander Pakhadi, had gone to meet his friend, Fr MA Soosai, at his school in the area. Father Soosai, however, was in Worli at the time. While leaving the school, D’Mello was confronted by three men on a motorbike — two wearing helmets and one covering his face with a napkin. One of them fired two bullets at D’Mello’s chest before the trio fled the scene.
Despite the injuries, D’Mello managed to get up, drive himself to Oscar Hospital, and seek medical help. Doctors performed surgery and removed the bullets from his upper and lower chest. His condition remains critical.
Fr MA Soosai
Speaking with mid-day, Fr MA Soosai said, “I am scared and shocked by this attack. I cannot understand why someone would target him.”
The Charkop police have registered an FIR and are investigating the case. A police source suggested that the shooting may be linked to property dealings and assured that the accused would be apprehended soon.
