A woman teacher has been arrested over the death of a Class 6 student who was allegedly forced to perform 100 sit-ups for coming late to school in Maharashtra's Palghar district, an official said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.

The teacher, who has since been removed from the private school at Sativali in the Vasai area, has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, said the official from Waliv police station, reported PTI.

The girl was allegedly made to perform 100 sit-ups after she reached the school late on November 8. Her mother has alleged that the girl died as a result of an 'inhuman punishment' given by her teacher, who made her perform sit-ups with her school bag on her back.

The official said the 13-year-old girl had health issues and could not bear the punishment. She took ill and was taken to a hospital in Mumbai, where she died after seven days, reported PTI.

The death had sparked a protest by local residents and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena workers, prompting the police to register a case. The police arrested the teacher on Tuesday night, said the official, reported PTI.

While the education department has launched an investigation into the incident, the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation has also initiated a probe.

Wife, son held for jeweller's murder in Thane district; property dispute suspected

In another case, a 51-year-old jeweller was killed in Maharashtra's Thane district, allegedly by his wife and son over a suspected property dispute, police said on Thursday, reported PTI.

The body of Sushanto Pal was found with severe injuries on Wednesday in his house-cum-jewellery shop in the Bhayander area, said the official from Navghar police station, reported PTI.

Working on various leads, the police took into custody Pal's wife Amruta (42) and their 19-year-old son Sumit at night, he said.

"Initial reports indicate that the mother-son duo killed the victim over a property dispute," he said, reported PTI.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly killing her infant son by throwing him into the Wainganga River in Gondia district of Maharashtra, police said on Wednesday.

The accused initially tried to mislead the police by claiming that someone had stolen her baby on November 17, an official said.
