A 34-year-old criminal has been arrested for allegedly burgling a flat in Thane district, leading to the recovery of stolen goods worth Rs 19.81 lakh and cracking of multiple cases, a senior officer said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.

Police tracked down and arrested the accused, Roshan Bala Jadhav, on July 3 after registering a case of house-breaking against him at Badlapur police station.

Addressing a press conference in Thane, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav stated that Roshan's arrest has unravelled at least eight burglaries registered at various police stations in Badlapur, reported PTI.

"Roshan is a habitual offender. After his arrest, we recovered gold and silver jewellery, laptops, mobile phones, and cash. The total value of the recovered property is Rs 19,81,360," he said.

The police officer said Roshan used to conduct reconnaissance and target flats located above the third floors of buildings.

The DCP neither confirmed nor denied reports that the accused holds a degree in journalism and previously worked as a journalist.

"We have received such claims, but these details are under verification," he added, reported PTI.

Elderly man loses Rs 73.72 lakh in gold trading fraud after meeting woman on dating app

In another case, a 62-year-old resident of Navi Mumbai has allegedly been cheated of Rs 73.72 lakh after being lured into gold trading for high returns by a woman whom he met through a dating application, police said on Monday, reported PTI.

The woman got in touch with the man, who resides in New Panvel area, through the dating app between March and May 2024.

Following initial interactions, the two continued chatting on WhatsApp during which the woman, who identified herself as Zia, lured the man to invest in a gold trading scheme, an official from Khandeshwar police station said.

The woman assured the victim of high returns and persuaded him to use a specific trading application. The victim subsequently invested Rs 73.72 lakh over a span of three months, the official said, reported PTI.

However, when no returns were credited later, the man grew suspicious.

When he tried to enquire about the promised returns and the invested money, the woman stopped responding and eventually became incommunicado, the official said.

The man then approached the police with a complaint.

Following a preliminary inquiry, the police on July 4 registered a case under sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, the official said.

The police were working to trace the accused and track digital footprints related to the fraudulent transactions, he added.
