Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Monday reiterated his allegations against the BJP, accusing the party of favouring industrialist Gautam Adani and enabling the rapid expansion of the Adani Group across Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the country. In a post on X, Raj referred to maps shown during his rally on Sunday with cousin Uddhav, claiming they illustrated how major infrastructure and business projects were awarded to the Adani Group after the BJP came to power. अदानी समुहाचा एमएमआर परिसरातील विस्तार जरूर पहा... pic.twitter.com/EYZ3mP5JHc — MNS Adhikrut - मनसे अधिकृत (@mnsadhikrut) January 12, 2026 The two cousins held a joint Shiv Sena (UBT)–Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) rally at Shivaji Park in Dadar, Mumbai, where they shared the stage for the first time in nearly two decades, ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Election 2026. During his address, Raj used maps from 2014 and 2025 to argue that Gautam Adani’s business footprint had expanded dramatically under BJP rule. He claimed that while Adani had limited projects earlier, the conglomerate now operates across sectors such as electricity, cement, ports, airports, and infrastructure, allegedly with government backing. “In 2014, Gautam Adani had just one project in Maharashtra. By 2024, he has multiple projects across the state,” Raj said, pointing to visuals displayed during his speech. Referring specifically to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Raj said, “Take a close look at the expansion of the Adani Group in the MMR region. Some forces, still resentful that Mumbai became part of Maharashtra instead of Gujarat, are now trying to gain control over Mumbai and MMR by backing this industrial conglomerate.” Raj also launched a broader attack on the BJP-led government, alleging that its governance showed little concern for public opinion. He claimed the controversy over Hindi ‘compulsion’ was a deliberate test to see whether the Marathi manoos was still alert. “After the Vidhan Sabha polls, the government started doing whatever it wanted. They didn’t care about the people of Maharashtra,” he said. Comparing the current regime with previous governments, Raj alleged, “This government neither cares about the people nor fears them.” He further accused the BJP of forming opportunistic political alliances, claiming the party allied with AIMIM in Akot and with the Congress in Badlapur, resulting in the election of 66 candidates without public scrutiny. “Today it is 66; tomorrow the number will increase,” he warned. Targeting BJP’s candidate selection, Raj alleged that Vinod Gangane, who he claimed was linked to a drug racket, was given a BJP ticket in Tuljapur, while Tushar Apte, who is a co-accused in the Badlapur sexual abuse case, was also fielded by the party. “How can such people be given tickets?” questioned the MNS chief. Raj further alleged that the BJP was “selling Mumbai, Maharashtra and even the country” and urged voters to consider the consequences carefully. During the rally, he also took a swipe at K Annamalai, mockingly referring to him as “rasmalai”, after the BJP leader reportedly described Mumbai as an “international city” while campaigning in Dharavi and Sion Koliwada. “One rasmalai has come from Tamil Nadu… what connection do you have with this place? Hatao lungi, bajao pungi,” Raj said, invoking the iconic slogan associated with the Shiv Sena founded by his late uncle, Balasaheb Thackeray. Raj’s remarks drew loud cheers from the crowd, highlighting the emotive issue of Mumbai’s identity as political parties gear up for the upcoming civic polls. The joint appearance of Raj and Uddhav at Shivaji Park marked a significant political moment, signalling a possible shift in Maharashtra’s political landscape ahead of BMC Election 2026.

12 January,2026 02:08 PM IST | MumbaiEvery year, what should be a time of rejoicing unexpectedly marks the start of a period of mourning for some families, with the practice of flying kites with razor-sharp manja never ceasing to mar festivities surrounding the sacred festival of Makar Sankranti. I lost a lot of blood because the cut was deep. I was admitted to the hospital. Doctors performed multiple surgeries and removed string that had got lodged in my neck. I was in continuous pain for almost three years after the incident. I will not be going outside on my bike on Makar Sankranti.” He added, “I request all citizens not to use Chinese manja or nylon manja. Ride slowly and avoid flyovers during the festival. Use mufflers, scarves, or neckbands. I use a neckband and advise all my friends and relatives to do the same.” Police officers ensure two-wheeler riders don neckbands in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, ahead of Makar Sankranti. Pics/By Special Arrangement A retired police officer, Dyandev Baburao Kedar, who was attached to the Malwani police station, was also injured by manja while on duty. “In 2012, I was injured when heading from Kandivali to Malwani on my bike. 12 January,2026 01:14 PM IST | Mumbai | Shirish VaktaniaMaharashtra minister Chandrakant Patil has expressed confidence that the BJP-led Mahayuti will retain control of all five municipal corporations in western Maharashtra in the upcoming civic polls. Mahayuti eyeing mayoral posts across all 29 civic bodies The senior BJP leader further told PTI that the Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP, would secure mayoral posts across all 29 municipal corporations in the state, where the elections are scheduled on January 15. Marathi and non-Marathi voters backing alliance, says Patil He also downplayed the impact of regional and linguistic issues raised by rival parties in Mumbai, claiming that both Marathi and non-Marathi voters continue to back the alliance. Patil is overseeing election preparations for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kolhapur, Sangli and Ichalkaranji municipal corporations, where the BJP came to power after the 2017 civic polls. BJP expects over 115 seats in Pune Municipal Corporation The BJP leader said their internal assessments indicate a decisive advantage across these municipal bodies. BJP is on a strong footing in the 165-member Pune Municipal Corporation, he added. "We are already confident of winning around 115 seats...not less than 115. The assessment is based on a recent micro-level review of detailed constituency-wise and ward-level assessments conducted by our state BJP president, Ravindra Chavan," he told PTI. Seat-sharing with RPI(A); no alliance with Shiv Sena in Pune Following the corrective measures suggested by Chavan, at least 10 more seats can be added, Patil claimed. BJP is almost contesting independently in Pune, with some seats shared with alliance partner Republican Party of India (A). The alliance with Shiv Sena could not fructify as no understanding could be reached between the two parties over seat-sharing. Patil further said the BJP expects to win 80 of the 128 seats in Pimpri-Chinchwad, with local leaders projecting the figure could rise to 85. Strong coordination between BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP in Kolhapur In Kolhapur, the BJP, Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are working in close coordination, he informed. "It is a perfect alliance of all three partners there. Out of 81 seats, the Mahayuti is expected to secure around 65," the BJP leader said, expressing confidence that the "mayor's post will remain within the alliance irrespective of the seat-sharing arrangement." As far as the Ichalkaranji civic body in Kolhapur district is concerned, there are a total of 65 seats and the BJP will win 55, Patil said. BJP confident in Sangli despite Opposition heavyweights In Sangli, he acknowledged the presence of some Opposition political heavyweights like NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil, Congress MLA Vishwajeet Kadam, former BJP MP and NCP leader Sanjay Kaka Patil and present MP Vishal Patil, but maintained that the BJP-led combine is well-placed to improve upon its previous performance. He said the party is confident of winning at least 45 of the 78 seats, including those contested by the Republican Party of India (RPI), which is fighting on the BJP's symbol. Shiv Sena, he clarified, is not part of the alliance in Sangli. Solapur challenges under control, says Patil The BJP leader also dismissed concerns about internal challenges in Solapur, stating that despite differences, no leader was acting against party interests. The Opposition remains fragmented, while the BJP's legislative strength in the district has improved since the last election, he said. On the overall civic poll scenario in Maharashtra, Chandrakant Patil claimed the Mahayuti alliance would win all 29 municipal corporations in the state. (With inputs from PTI)
12 January,2026 12:33 PM IST | Pune | mid-day online correspondentThe Maharashtra SEC has sought a report from the chief secretary on a minister's claims that the Ladki Bahin Yojana financial aid would be disbursed to beneficiaries before Makar Sankranti, amid allegations of violation of the Model Code of Conduct. The move followed complaints by Opposition parties, which alleged that the timing of the proposed disbursal amounted to an inducement to women voters ahead of elections to 29 municipal corporations scheduled on January 15. SEC asks Chief Secretary for report by Monday The State Election Commission (SEC) has asked Chief Secretary Rajesh Agarwal to submit a report on Monday, sources told PTI. The Ladki Bahin Yojana is a flagship scheme of the state government under which eligible women beneficiaries get a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500. The scheme is widely credited with helping the Mahayuti secure victory in the 2024 assembly elections. Girish Mahajan announces two-month payout before Makar Sankranti In a social media post last week, BJP leader and state minister Girish Mahajan said the assistance of Rs 3,000, covering instalments for December 2025 and January 2026, would be deposited into the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries before Makar Sankranti, which falls on January 14. Congress submits complaint to SEC State Congress leader and advocate Sandesh Kondvilkar submitted a complaint to the SEC on Saturday, claiming the payment was proposed for January 14, a day before polling, and sought its intervention to stop the transfer. SEC seeks clarification on timing of payment The SEC sent a letter to the state chief secretary on Sunday, seeking clarification on the factual position and whether the government intended to release two months' instalments together just ahead of the polls, with a response sought by 11 am on Monday, the sources said. Fadnavis defends Ladki Bahin Yojana Amid the controversy, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Ladki Bahin Yojana was a continuous scheme of the state government and did not fall under the restrictions of the election code of conduct. ‘Congress tried to stop the scheme, now wants funds halted,’ says Fadnavis Amid the raging over the timing of the disbursement of the financial aid to eligible beneficiaries of Ladki Bahin Yojana, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hit back, saying that “When we started the scheme, Congress leaders went to the High Court to stop it, but that petition didn't hold. Now they are saying don't give the money. 'Ladki Bahin' is a continuous ongoing scheme of the state government, and such schemes do not fall under the restrictions of the election code of conduct. No matter what Congress says, the funds will be given to our beloved sisters." Congress objects to eve-of-poll disbursal Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal has, however, said the party was not opposed to the scheme, but objected to the release of two months' assistance on the eve of voting, calling it a clear violation of the model code of conduct. In other words, a wave of development is sweeping across the entire country. In this wave of progress, Maharashtra has also become number one in the country...," said Goyal, reported ANI. Mahayuti vs opposition battle heats up ahead of BMC elections Meanwhile, the battle between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition has intensified ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2026. Uddhav Thackeray attacks Maharashtra government over Mumbai’s condition Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray launched a scathing attack on the Maharashtra government, accusing it of ruining Mumbai in three years, undoing what the then-undivided Shiv Sena had built over 25 years. ‘Those who question Thackerays’ existence haven’t been born yet,’ says Uddhav Addressing a joint rally ahead of the upcoming BMC elections 2026, Thackeray asserted that those who question the existence of the Thackeray family "have not been born yet." "Those who can determine the existence of the Thackerays haven't been born yet... Devendra Fadnavis says, 'Show me Uddhav Thackeray's speech on development, and I will give you Rs 3000.' I don't want his stolen money. Show me a speech from PM Modi where you haven't indulged in Hindu-Muslim politics, and I will give you Rs 1000... All this Adani-isation is going on... Isn't this their ploy to turn Mumbai back into Bombay?... Ask the people what the Shiv Sena did in 25 years and how they have ruined Mumbai in 3 years... Mumbai was acquired with bloodshed. It is our duty to fight alongside soldiers like you to push back this attack... Balasaheb Thackeray taught us that if someone lays a hand on you, tear off their hand. Bury the curse of division today," said Uddhav Thackeray. Aaditya Thackeray questions Mahayuti’s development claims Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray also criticised the Mahayuti alliance, stating that no development has occurred in Mumbai over the last 25 years. "They say nothing was done in 25 years. Even if you wake me up from my sleep, I can tell you what we have done in 25 years. Without imposing any taxes, we collected a deposit of Rs 92,000 crore. This deposit is kept for the service of Mumbai. They say, 'Show us the work and take Rs 3000'. Instead of giving us Rs 3000, you should first give Rs 2100 that you promised to women..." said Aaditya Thackeray. Maharashtra municipal corporation polls on January 15 The State Election Commission in Maharashtra has announced elections to 29 municipal corporations across the state, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Thousands of devotees braved the freezing conditions to take a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayagraj during the ongoing Magh Mela. In Agra, a thin layer of fog enveloped the Taj Mahal, creating low-visibility conditions at the Taj View Point area, according to the news agency ANI. According to the IMD, the city’s maximum temperature is expected to hover around 20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to drop to 7 degrees Celsius as cold conditions intensify. Despite the extreme cold, devotees continued to arrive in large numbers at the Sangam in Prayagraj, undeterred by the plunging temperatures. Pilgrims took a holy dip in the early hours of the morning, as the spiritual fervour of the Magh Mela remained strong amid harsh winter conditions. The Magh Mela of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which takes place at the divine Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the legendary Saraswati—is one of the largest pilgrimages in India. The pilgrimage is named after the Hindu month of Magh, which typically falls in January-February, as per ANI. The Prayag Magh Mela is a 45-day pilgrimage that begins on Paush Purnima (the full moon day of the month of Paush) and ends on Mahashivaratri, spanning the entire month of Magh. Meanwhile, cold wave conditions were also reported in Haridwar, where dense fog blanketed the Har Ki Paudi ghat, significantly affecting visibility. In Haryana, thick fog engulfed Karnal district as the cold wave intensified. IMD forecasts indicate that the maximum temperature in Karnal is expected to reach 17 degrees Celsius, while the minimum could dip to around 4 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, Mumbai also witnessed deteriorating air conditions, with a layer of smog lingering over areas such as Wadala on Monday morning. Meanwhile, New Delhi reeled under an intense cold spell, with temperatures dipping sharply across the national capital. Ayanagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 2.9 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD. Several parts of the city experienced cold wave conditions on Sunday night, with minimum temperatures plunging close to the three-degree mark. Palam recorded a minimum temperature of 3.0 degrees Celsius, its lowest in several years. IMD data suggests that similar cold conditions are likely to persist through the day. At Safdarjung, the minimum temperature was 4.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday night and is expected to drop further to around 3 degrees Celsius on Monday night. The Ridge station recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature there reached 18.8 degrees Celsius, reported ANI. Furthermore, air pollution levels remained a concern. Of these 6,871 officers and employees, 2,350 subsequently joined the election process, the BMC said in a release. Police action to be taken against 4,521 defaulting employees Police action will be initiated from Monday against the remaining 4,521 officers and employees who failed to report for training, polling-related work or other assigned duties despite repeated instructions, it added, reported PTI. Over 1.03 crore voters to cast ballots in Mumbai The BMC elections 2026 involve over 1.03 crore voters, requiring deployment of a large number of personnel. However, a shortage of staff has been observed, forcing the administration to take strict decisions, the release said quoting Joshi. Repeated training absences led to legal action "The first and second phases of training for officials deployed on election duty have been completed. Attendance at training sessions was mandatory. Officials who skipped training were given a final opportunity on January 10, but continued absence led to the initiation of action under election laws from Sunday," it said, reported PTI. 12 January,2026 10:39 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentMaharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday took a swipe at Deputy CM Ajit Pawar for criticising the BJP during the civic poll campaign in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, saying they had agreed on "friendly" contests despite both parties fighting separately, reported news agency PTI. BJP and NCP decided to fight civic elections independently Speaking during an interaction with actor Girija Oak, Fadnavis said the BJP and the NCP had decided well in advance that they would not contest the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic elections as allies since both were strong parties in the region, reported PTI. Ajit Pawar forges alliance with Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) Ajit Pawar's NCP, a constituent of the ruling Mahayuti, has been repeatedly targeting the BJP over local governance in the run-up to polls to the January 15 Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations. He has forged a tie-up with NCP (SP), led by his uncle Sharad Pawar, for the two civic bodies. ‘His restraint is somewhat shaken,’ says Fadnavis Asked about Ajit Pawar's criticism of the BJP, Fadnavis said, "Ajit dada only speaks, but my work speaks. We had already decided then that even if we contest against each other, it would be a friendly contest and that we would refrain from criticising each other or each other's parties. I have followed that rule till now, but his restraint is somewhat shaken," reported PTI. However, Ajit Pawar won't "speak" after January 15, when votes will be cast, said Fadnavis, exuding confidence in the BJP's performance. Fadnavis reacts to Raj–Uddhav Thackeray alliance Asked that he was being dubbed an expert who brings estranged brothers together, referring to the alliance between MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray, Fadnavis said he is thankful to Raj for giving him the credit, reported PTI. On Ajit Pawar–Supriya Sule tie-up, Fadnavis quips When asked whether he should be credited for Ajit Pawar and his cousin, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, joining hands against the BJP in Pune, Fadnavis quipped that he had no idea whether the brother and sister had come together or whether they would give him credit for it. Fadnavis mocks free Metro travel promise To a question about Pawar's promises of free Metro and civic transport travel to people in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad if their alliance comes to power, Fadnavis said sarcastically that he was thinking about announcing free air travel for women in Pune. "What does it take to make an announcement?" he asked. ‘Unrealistic promises mislead voters,’ says CM "When one knows they are not going to get elected, they release manifestos and say anything. But my point is that at least we should say things that people can believe, things that are actually doable," said the CM, reported PTI. Metro fares decided by legal committee, not politicians Metro corridors not only belong to the state, but also to the Centre, he said. "When fares are fixed for any Metro route, a fare fixation committee is formed under the law, and that committee alone has the legal authority to decide fares. Even if I feel like waiving the fares tomorrow, I cannot do so," he said. Fadnavis questions funding of free travel schemes If one wants to give concessions and is not going to recover operational costs, where the money will come from, he asked. "That is why making promises about things that are not even in your hands is misleading," said Fadnavis, reported PTI. ‘Punekars want reliable services, not freebies’ Punekars pay their taxes on time and do not want things for free, said the senior BJP leader. "They want reliability and dependability. They want good Metro and bus services. For that, they are willing to pay the minimum required cost," he said. The residents of Pune are also well aware that those making such promises are not going to get elected, he said. Fadnavis raises concern over tickets to candidates with criminal background About tickets to candidates with criminal background, Fadnavis, who is also the state's home minister, said he is perplexed why there was a need to favour such individuals when there are 60 lakh people in Pune. ‘Koyta gang’ references return in ticket controversy He said those who called for an end to "koyta" (sickle-wielding gangs) menace in Pune have nominated persons with a criminal past, indirectly referring to the NCP, which has given tickets to criminal Bandu Andekar's relatives who are in jail along with him in the murder of his grandson Ayush Komkar. ‘Their real place is jail, not civic bodies,’ says Fadnavis Even if these criminals get elected, their real place is jail, not in Pimpri-Chinchwad, asserted Fadnavis.
