At Nair hospital man sneaks in loaded gun, threatens doc

Cops arrest man for threatening a doctor with a revolver at the Radiology department of the civic run Nair Hospital, after his son was made to wait in line for a Brain MRI

In spite of extensive security at all major civic hospitals in the wake of the blasts, a man managed to sneak a loaded revolver into the Nair hospital premises, using it to threaten a doctor. Imam Hasan Siddiqi (40), was arrested by the Agripada police on Thursday night.



Siddiqui and his wife had taken their son Anwar Imam (13), to the hospital on Thursday afternoon. Anwar, a suspected patient of mental retardation, has been receiving treatment at the hospital's out patient department (OPD) for the past few months, and was scheduled for a brain MRI.

Losing his patience while waiting in the queue, an irate Siddiqi started shouting at the staffers. Emerging out of his chamber to see what the confusion was all about, Dr Vipul Chemburkar, assistant professor of Radiology, decided to intervene, explaining to the Siddiqi family that there were emergency patients who needed scans urgently.

"I requested Siddiqui to be quiet, as his tantrums were further delaying procedures. However, he was implacable and kept shouting," said Chemburkar in his statement to the police.

When he claimed that he wanted his money back, they asked him to seek a refund at the accounts department. "Even then, Siddiqi refused to budge from the spot, and the couple started quarrelling among themselves. Soon Siddiqi returned, renewing his request for an MRI," said a doctor, who witnessed the incident.
"When he came back, I told him to wait in line, as there were two other patients before him. But he refused to comply. I threatened to call security, to which he lifted his shirt to reveal a revolver tucked inside his trouser, saying, 'tumhari security mera kya bigadegi'", recalled Chemburkar.

Dr Mahesh Shah, officer on special duty at the hospital said, "As soon as the security guards informed us about the incident, we approached the police, and registered a case.

The matter is under investigation." Sudhir Pawar, police officer at Agripada station said, "We arrested him as he had threatened a doctor on duty. The revolver on his person was loaded, and he produced a license for it. He was booked under sec 506 (2) and was remanded to judicial custody."

Charges
Section 506 (2) of the IPC states that whoever threatens to cause grievous hurt to another, is guilty of criminal intimidation, and shall be punished with imprisonment for a period that may extend to two years.

DEJA VU
On Sept 3, 2009, a patient's husband walked into the MRI scanning room of an expensive private hospital, with a revolver hidden in his clothes. The powerful magnetic effect of the machine pulled in his revolver, which then accidentally went off, after ricocheting against a wall, endangering the lives of all those present in the small room, including him and his wife.
