Two people Faheem Ansari and Sabaudeen Ahmed were booked last year for carrying out a recce of Mumbai and providing maps to the Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan to aid the 26/11 attacks.
But the Mumbai police may have to reexamine the case after the FBI charged David Headley for carrying out similar recces for last year's terrorist attacks.
The UP police had arrested Ansari and Ahmed, both Mumbai residents, in early 2008 in connection with an attack on a CRPF outpost in Rampur.
They were later booked along with terrorist Ajmal Qasab, as the police had recovered some marked maps of Mumbai from Ansari, who was allegedly taking orders from Ahmed.
But now, Ansari and Ahmed's lawyer, Ejaz Naqvi, claims that the new evidence changes their case completely. "They were arrested long before the 26/11 attacks.
Why would Headley carry out recces if Ansari had already done so? The police wanted to show local support, so they framed these two."
While senior police officials refused to comment, a police officer said, "The new evidence could be helpful for the defence of Ansari and Ahmed, but it would not be an issue for us since they can be booked along with Headley."
