After issuing notices to the under-construction Bombay High Court building in Bandra East and the bullet train construction site over the past one month for flouting the civic body's pollution guidelines, officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out site inspections on Sunday in K East Ward (Andheri) and H East Ward (Bandra East). The civic body said the purpose of the visit was to ensure effective implementation of the ongoing preventive measures to maintain healthy air quality in Mumbai. The site inspections were led by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr Avinash Dhakane. In a statement, BMC said, "Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Dhakane inspected the work of the bullet train project, the site of the high court, and government housing projects. He also inspected the service road at Kherwadi Junction and reviewed the cleanliness, dust control, and traffic management there." During the inspection, officials checked that water was being sprayed regularly to prevent dust, green nets were covering construction materials, materials were properly covered during transport, and roads were being cleaned mechanically. Authorities were instructed to take special care around schools and densely populated localities. "Instructions were given to ensure that no kind of negligence adversely affects the health of the citizens in the area, especially children, senior citizens, and patients. Dr Dhakane also stated that strict action will be taken against contractors and organisations violating the rules, wherever necessary," the BMC statement further said. Mumbai’s AQI recorded at 132 Mumbai's air quality index (AQI) on Sunday was recorded at 132, in the 'moderate' category. Only Kandivali West recorded AQI in the 'poor' category at 221. 28 December,2025 05:33 PM IST | Mumbai | Eeshanpriya MSShiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday said he would speak to Congress leader Digvijaya Singh to understand the change in his opinion after the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s (CM’s) remarks praising the organisational strength of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) sparked speculation about differences within his party, news agency ANI reported. Calling Digvijaya Singh a friend, Raut said, “The fact is, the RSS never participated in the country’s freedom struggle. The RSS never hoisted or displayed the national tricolour flag at its offices for 50 years. The RSS is at the forefront of creating religious tension in the country. I have seen that Digvijaya Singh ji has launched a very strong attack on the RSS in Parliament. So what happened all of a sudden? He is a friend of mine, and I will understand from him how this change in his opinion came about.” #WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra | On Congress leader Digvijaya Singh praising the organisational strength of the RSS, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut says, "The fact is, the RSS never participated in the country's freedom struggle. Speaking to the media, the former Rajasthan Deputy CM said, “Congress party is united. The country needs a strong opposition. Our intention is to strengthen the organisation. In our party, we have the right to speak about our thoughts.” Pilot added that Singh had expressed his personal views and later clarified them, but the broader objective of the party remained unchanged, ANI reported. “He said whatever he had to, and after that, he also gave his clarification. All the Congress leaders have only one goal to strengthen Kharge and Rahul ji,” he said. Digvijay Singh says comments on RSS were misunderstood Singh on Saturday reiterated that while he remains opposed to the ideology of the RSS, he admires its organisational capability. “I’ve been saying this from the beginning: I am opposed to the ideology of the RSS. They neither respect the Constitution nor the country’s laws, and it’s an unregistered organisation. But I admire their organisational capacity because an organisation that isn’t even registered has become so powerful that the Prime Minister says from the Red Fort that it is the world’s largest NGO,” Singh said. Speculation about internal differences within the Congress grew after Singh remarked on the party’s organisational strength, saying there was “room for improvement” and that every organisation should always strive to improve. His comments followed a social media post on Saturday in which he shared a black-and-white photograph from the 1990s showing current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, then in his youth, seated near senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani at an event in Gujarat. “I found this picture on the Quora site. It is very impressive. In what way did the grassroots swayamsevak of RSS and the worker of Jan Sangh @BJP4India sit on the floor at the feet of leaders and become the Chief Minister of the state and the Prime Minister of the country? This is the power of the organisation. Jai Siya Ram,” Singh wrote in his post. Responding to criticism, Singh said his remarks had been misunderstood. “I support the organisation. I am against the RSS and Modi ji. You have misunderstood. I have praised ‘sangathan’. I was, am, and will remain a staunch opponent of the RSS and Modi. Is it a bad thing to strengthen and praise the organisation?” he said. (With ANI inputs)
28 December,2025 04:16 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentMaharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Sunday said the country needs the party's ideology rooted in the Constitution as society is being divided along lines of caste, religion, language and sect. Speaking at a function at Tilak Bhavan in Mumbai to mark the Indian National Congress's 140th foundation day, Sapkal accused the ruling BJP of weakening social harmony and creating divisions. "The country is facing a serious crisis today. The only ideology that can save the nation is the Congress ideology," he said. Sapkal said that while India attained freedom on August 15, 1947, the struggle for systemic change continues. He alleged that the BJP and the RSS believed political and religious power should remain in the hands of a few, but the Congress believes the country belongs to everyone and all citizens have equal rights over power and wealth. Congress ideology is rooted in the Constitution: Harshwardhan Sapkal "The Congress ideology is rooted in the Constitution. It is spiritual and focuses on the welfare of the world. The BJP's ideology does not uphold gender equality and promotes discrimination. The Congress stands firmly against such thinking," he said, urging party workers to take pride in the party's tradition of sacrifice and struggle. Sapkal further claimed that the Congress had achieved encouraging results in the recently held municipal council and nagar panchayat elections despite the ruling party's money power, administrative support and pressure tactics. "Our workers did not bow down. Maintain this spirit. We will fight and we will win," he asserted. Sapkal administered a pledge to Congress workers to protect the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), saying it was not merely a government scheme but a concrete expression of the right to employment. "We are committed to protecting the MGNREGA at any cost. We will collectively struggle to ensure dignity, employment, justice and timely wages for rural workers. We will oppose any attempt to remove Mahatma Gandhi's name from the scheme or to dilute workers' rights, through all democratic means," the pledge said. The Indian National Congress was founded on December 28, 1885, in Bombay (Mumbai) in the presence of 72 delegates at Das Tejpal Sanskrit College.

There are a total of 131 seats in Thane for which elections will be held on January 15, Replying to a question why the third Mahayuti constituent - Ajit Pawar's NCP - was not contesting the upcoming local polls with Sena and BJP, Mhaske said since NCP's city unit president Najeeb Mulla had declared that they will not not go with the two parties, it has been kept out of the alliance talks. 28 December,2025 10:03 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentResidents of JB Nagar in Andheri East have raised serious concerns over an unauthorised encroachment on a public footpath outside Kalgidhar School, falling under the K East Ward limits. Large construction materials — including pipes, and a generator — have been placed on the footpath by a private company’s contractors, without any visible permission from the civic authorities. “The obstruction has made the footpath unusable, forcing us to walk directly on the busy road. With vehicular traffic constantly flowing, the risk of accidents has increased,” said Sanjana Bajaj, whose son studies in class seven of the school. Civic activists pointed out that along with encroachment of public property, loading and storing construction materials like this on the footpaths have also led to anti-social activities. “Every time we pass, we see someone either peeing or consuming alcohol at night hours. Even after complaining multiple times, the authorities do not pay any heed,” questioned activist Godfrey Pimenta who has written a letter to the civic authorities on behalf of the residents raising this issue. When contacted, K-east ward officer did not respond to any communication made by Sunday mid-day.
