Minister calls for long-term measures to prevent Mumbai-Pune Expressway jams

The massive traffic jam on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway persisted for over 30 hours on Wednesday night, prompting Maharashtra PWD Minister of State Indranil Naik to call for long-term solutions to prevent such incidents. Meanwhile, a transport industry representative said the situation highlighted the authorities’ lack of preparedness, reported news agency PTI.  Naik told a Marathi news channel that he was coordinating with the Home and PWD secretaries to ensure the expressway traffic was cleared promptly. Traffic had come to a standstill after a gas tanker carrying propylene overturned near the Adoshi tunnel at around 5 pm on Tuesday. As per PTI, a probe will be conducted into the incident, the minister added, emphasising that long-term measures were needed to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Bal Malkit Singh, advisor and former president of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), said the incident once again exposed the authorities’ inadequate preparedness in handling such emergencies. “The traffic jam has caused severe inconvenience to commuters and massive losses to the transport industry,” Singh said in a statement, reported PTI.  He added that despite paying heavy tolls and multiple taxes, the transport fraternity continues to suffer due to inadequate infrastructure and poor emergency response mechanisms. Aaditya Thackeray slams Maharashtra govt over Mumbai-Pune Expressway traffic chaos Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday slammed the Maharashtra government for not ensuring basic facilities for commuters stuck on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway for more than 20 hours. In a post on X, he questioned why authorities couldn't intervene and offer food, water, and toilets, calling the situation "beyond absurd." "It's beyond absurd that the Government can't intervene and help people stuck on the Mumbai- Pune Expressway for over 20 hours. For all the talk of development and good governance, a basic intervention could have helped by reaching out to the people and offering food/ water/ toilets at certain distances from where they're stuck," he posted. Thackeray also suggested that toll operators should bear responsibility for providing these services, given that they maintain and operate the highways. "Been hearing of the plight of the people and the helplessness with which they've had to deal with this. Shouldn't the toll operators be made to pay for these services that they "maintain" and "operate" the highways for?" added Aaditya Thackeray. Mumbai-Pune Expressway chaos: Shinde directs MSRDC to prepare emergency plan

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday took serious note of Mumbai-Pune Expressway chaos, the massive traffic congestion caused by the overturning of a gas tanker at Borghat, which led to severe inconvenience for motorists, reported the IANS. Shinde has directed the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the police to prepare a special emergency traffic management plan for the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future. The gas tanker overturned at around 5 pm on February 3, resulting in the leakage of highly flammable propylene gas. Given the heightened risk of explosion and potential large-scale damage, authorities had no option but to divert traffic. Consequently, vehicles on the expressway were rerouted to the old Mumbai-Pune highway. After nearly 20 hours of continuous efforts, MSRDC and police personnel succeeded in controlling the gas leak, according to the IANS. Understand the difficulties faced Shinde said he was aware of the difficulties being endured by the people. “The MSRDC immediately sought assistance from the National Disaster Response Force. Despite their efforts, the operation was extremely challenging, and the risk to human life could not be ruled out,” he said, as per the IANS. He added that MSRDC arranged large quantities of drinking water and biscuits for stranded passengers and that all officers and staff were deployed on the ground. Shinde also instructed authorities to suspend toll collection on the expressway until traffic normalises. Mumbai-Pune Missing Link project Additionally, he directed the department to expedite the completion of the Mumbai-Pune Missing Link project. Once operational, the project will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune and provide an alternative route during emergencies, he said. Following detailed discussions with MSRDC and police officials, Shinde asked them to draw up a comprehensive emergency response plan for the expressway. Emergency Response Plan activated Meanwhile, MSRDC stated that its Emergency Response Plan (ERP) was activated immediately after receiving information about the accident on the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, the news agency reported. To minimise inconvenience to motorists, temporary toll-free entry and exit facilities were provided at affected toll plazas. A team of chemical experts successfully sealed two gas leakage points on the tanker, while the third leak has largely been brought under control. MSRDC further informed that the process of transferring the gas from the damaged tanker to a secure tanker began at 5 pm on Wednesday. Once completed, the tanker will be removed and traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway will be restored, the IANS reported. (with IANS inputs)

Chartered flight of Maharashtra minister Gulabrao Patil grounded in Latur

Permission for take-off was denied to a chartered aircraft carrying Maharashtra Water Supply Minister Gulabrao Patil at Latur airport on Wednesday evening, according to an official statement from the district administration, reported the PTI. The Shiv Sena leader was scheduled to fly to Jalgaon, his hometown, earlier in the day. However, he reportedly arrived late at the airport, which delayed the planned departure. Officials said that flight operations from Latur airport require clearances from Bidar and two other authorities. As the necessary permissions could not be obtained in time, the aircraft was not allowed to take off, according to the PTI. Following the denial of permission, Minister Patil travelled to Jalgaon by road, officials confirmed. No further details were shared by the administration regarding the incident. Technical snag reported in chopper scheduled to fly minister Pankaja Munde A technical snag was detected in a helicopter hours before it was scheduled to transport Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde for campaigning for the Zilla Parishad polls in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, an airport official had said on Tuesday, reported the PTI. The snag was found late on Monday night hours before the BJP leader was to fly to Latur, he said. According to officials, Munde arrived in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on a chartered plane on Monday and took the helicopter for poll campaigning later in the day. However, when the aviation company conducted a routine inspection later that night, they found some technical issues with the chopper and informed the authorities at the Chikalthana airport, they said. The chopper was scheduled to transport the BJP leader to Latur around 11 am on Tuesday, but her journey was delayed by two hours, the official said. Helicopter was old Talking to reporters, Munde said that the helicopter was old, but she didn't raise the issue and continued her travel. She said ever since NCP leader Ajit Pawar's tragic death in the January 28 crash in Baramati, flying has caused anxiety among party leaders. Munde has been campaigning extensively for the February 7 Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls, and has held rallies in Marathwada. Malanggad Funicular Railway: Police deny social media claims on technical snag

The Thane Police in Maharashtra on Wednesday denied viral social media claims suggesting that the newly-inaugurated Malanggad funicular railway had malfunctioned and that passengers were stranded inside the trolley. Officials clarified that the service was temporarily suspended only for routine maintenance and is now operating normally. A senior police officer from Ulhasnagar said there was no technical fault or safety concern with the railway, which connects the foothills to the Shri Malanggad shrine. “There is absolutely no issue with the funicular railway. It was shut from Tuesday afternoon only for maintenance work. Once the work was completed, services resumed smoothly on Wednesday afternoon,” said Senior Police Inspector Sandeep Shivle. Viral messages termed misleading Shivle said messages circulating on social media claimed that the railway had got stuck and that several passengers were trapped inside the trolley. “These messages are incorrect and misleading. No such incident took place,” he said, adding that services are currently running without any disruption. The officer acknowledged that the system has been under heavy pressure due to the ongoing yatra season, with a sharp rise in the number of devotees. “The footfall has increased manifold. Preventive maintenance was urgently required to ensure passenger safety,” he explained. India’s longest funicular railway The 1.2-kilometre-long Malanggad funicular railway, touted as India’s longest, was inaugurated on January 18, 2026. The project was designed to reduce the two to three-hour uphill trek to the Haji Malang Dargah and Malanggad shrine to a 10-minute ride, making access easier for devotees. “The railway is functioning safely. People should rely only on official information and not panic due to rumours,” Shivle said. Malanggad funicular railway opens after 12 years, cuts journey to 10 minutes After more than a decade marked by delays, funding constraints and bureaucratic hurdles, the Malanggad Funicular Railway in Thane district was inaugurated on Sunday, promising to transform access to the historic hill fort. The 1.2-kilometre, cable-operated system is the first funicular railway of its kind in India and the longest in the country, reducing the arduous two-hour climb to Malang Gad to a smooth 10-minute ride. The railway links the foothills to the hilltop that houses the historic Malanggad Fort, associated with the Maurya period, and the revered Mahadev Temple. Until now, visitors had to undertake a strenuous trek, making access particularly challenging for senior citizens, devotees and people with mobility limitations. With the railway’s long-awaited opening after 12 years, the site has become accessible to a wider cross-section of visitors, significantly enhancing inclusive heritage tourism. The project, initiated in 2013, encountered multiple setbacks over the years owing to technical upgrades, funding issues and administrative changes. Despite these challenges, its completion is being hailed as a landmark achievement for tourism and public access to historic sites. (with PTI inputs)

Maharashtra govt approves separate budget head for 'One Stop Centres' for women

Ahead of the Maharashtra Budget 2026, the state on Wednesday approved a separate budget head to cover the daily operational expenses of One Stop Centres (OSCs) established for women in distress under the Centre-sponsored Mission Shakti scheme, reported the PTI. The Maharashtra legislature’s Budget session is scheduled to begin on February 23. The newly created budget head will fund the routine management and day-to-day functioning of OSCs operating under the Sambal sub-scheme. These centres provide integrated support services such as psychological counselling, medical assistance, police support, temporary shelter and legal aid. The move aims to ensure uninterrupted funding for the centres’ ongoing operations. Earlier, an existing budget head was being used primarily for infrastructure-related expenses of OSCs. The government said a distinct accounting head was necessary to ensure that routine operational costs are met smoothly. The decision was announced through a government resolution (GR) issued by the Women and Child Development Department. Central funding and administrative oversight The approval falls under the Social Security and Welfare category and will be funded 100 per cent by the Centre. The Commissioner of Women and Child Development, Pune, has been appointed as the controlling authority for expenditure under the scheme. The accounts officer of the commissionerate will act as the drawing and disbursing officer. State to consider renaming Ladki Bahin scheme after Ajit Pawar Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the state government would consider a proposal to rename the Ladki Bahin welfare scheme after late Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar. The demand was raised on Tuesday by NCP MLC Amol Mitkari, who suggested that the government’s flagship Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, which provides financial assistance to women, should be renamed in Pawar’s memory. Speaking to reporters in Haridwar, CM Fadnavis said, “There are several demands. We will sit together and decide how to proceed.” Ajit Pawar, a senior Nationalist Congress Party leader, died along with four others in a plane crash at Baramati in Pune district on January 28. Mitkari said Pawar, fondly known as Ajitdada, enjoyed strong support among women across Maharashtra. “During his yatras, his wrists would be full of rakhis. Renaming the scheme as Ajitdadanchi Ladki Bahin Yojana would be a fitting tribute by the state government,” Mitkari said.

Traffic on Pune-Mumbai Expressway diverted after hazardous gas leak from tanker

The traffic on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway was diverted after a highly inflammable gas leak following an accident involving a tanker was reported along the route near Adoshi tunnel at the Borghat stretch, officials said. Considering the volatile nature of the gas, traffic on the Mumbai-bound corridor was stopped as a precautionary measure by the Highway Security Police. According to the officials, to manage and prevent congestion, authorities later opened one lane of the Pune-bound corridor for vehicles heading towards Mumbai around 7.30 pm, while vehicles travelling towards Pune were allowed to use the remaining two lanes after shifting the median barrier. Light vehicles heading towards Mumbai were diverted at km 42/400, near Magic Point, via the old Khopoli highway. Traffic diversions were implemented under the supervision of the Highway Security Patrol team, officials said. Volatile gas leak forces shutdown of Mumbai-bound corridor A chemical gas tanker heading from Pune to Mumbai overturned on the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway on Tuesday evening, forcing authorities to halt traffic for hours due to a hazardous gas leak. The accident occurred around 5 pm on Tuesday, near the Adoshi tunnel in the Borghat stretch. The officials said the tanker was carrying propylene gas, a highly inflammable substance. Following the mishap, the tanker sustained damage at three valve points, leading to gas leakage. Emergency services rushed to the spot After receiving alerts from patrolling teams, emergency response resources, including quick response vehicles, ambulances, fire-fighting equipment, Delta Force personnel and heavy machinery, were immediately deployed at the site. Additional fire tenders from Tata Steel and the Khopoli Municipal Council were also pressed into service. Gas tanker accident exposes lack of preparedness, says AIMTC former president Bal Malkit Singh, advisor and former president of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), on Wednesday criticised authorities over the prolonged disruption caused by the gas tanker accident on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. Singh said the incident, which has persisted for nearly 26 hours, exposed a lack of preparedness in handling such emergencies. “Normalcy has still not been restored, causing severe inconvenience to commuters and massive losses to the transport industry,” he said. He added that the movement of perishable goods, raw materials, and finished products has been badly affected, disrupting time-bound deliveries and resulting in substantial financial losses for industries. Transport operators and drivers are facing undue hardship, including financial losses due to prolonged detention of vehicles. “Despite paying heavy toll charges and multiple taxes, the transport fraternity continues to suffer due to inadequate infrastructure and poor emergency response mechanisms,” Singh said, urging the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and other concerned agencies to strengthen infrastructure and contingency planning to ensure such situations are handled efficiently in the future.

Massive traffic jam on Mumbai-Pune Expressway after gas tanker overturns

Mumbai-Pune Expressway during the early hours of Wednesday witnessed massive traffic congestion for more than seven hours after a chemical gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel in the Khandala Ghat section on Tuesday evening. Massive traffic congestion at the expressway severely disrupts vehicular movement on one of Maharashtra’s busiest corridors. The prolonged traffic congestion left hundreds of commuters stranded for hours, triggering outrage on social media. Commuters who have been stuck in traffic since the last few hours, on social media platform X wrote, “Over 1 hour stuck in massive traffic on the Mumbai Pune Expressway. Tolls are collected efficiently. When will commuters get efficient roads?” Slamming the authorities, the commuters also asked, “We speak of a trillion dollar economy, but are we building trillion worthy infrastructure? Accountability matters. Who is addressing this?” Over 1 hour stuck in massive traffic on the Mumbai Pune Expressway. The incident occurred around 5 pm on February 3 on the Mumbai-bound lane of the expressway.  Flammable gas leaks as tanker overturns near Adoshi tunnel The tanker reportedly overturned while passing through the ghat section, leading to leakage of flammable gas and raising serious safety concerns. Emergency response teams, including fire brigade personnel, highway traffic police and disaster management officials, rushed to the spot and launched operations on a war footing to contain the leak. The authorities said that efforts were underway late into the night to safely clear the tanker and restore normal traffic flow. However, they also mentioned that commuter safety remained the top priority as hazardous gas leakage posed significant risk in the hilly terrain. Further updates on traffic restoration and investigation into the cause of the accident are awaited. Mumbai medical interns allege filthy conditions at hostel; write to BMC

A group of Mumbai medical interns on Wednesday alleged filthy conditions at Nair Dental College hostel and wrote to BMC and Chief Minister's office on X, sharing pictures of unhygienic washrooms. The Association of State Medical Interns has raised concerns about the living conditions at the hostel and claimed that students have been allegedly forced to live amid unhygienic conditions for past eight days. In a post on X, the association said, “Is this how we treat the doctors who treat the public?” It described the hostel as being surrounded by overflowing garbage and having choked, filthy washrooms. In an official statement, the association said the hostel premises have not been cleaned for over a week, creating a serious health risk for students living in a medical institution. The association added that this was not an isolated incident, as similar situations have occurred in the past, often due to workers’ strikes. However, it claimed no effective action has been taken so far. Is this how we treat the doctors who treat the public? This is the current state of the * Nair Dental College Hostel*. We have been living in this filth for 8 DAYS.Overflowing garbage, Choked, filthy washroom, We Demand immediate Intervention @mybmc @CMOMaharashtra #Mumbai pic.twitter.com/3mJssWY1rZ — Association of State Medical Interns (@ASMIMaharashtra) February 4, 2026 Safety concerns raised Apart from sanitation issues, the interns also raised a major fire safety concern. They said the fire emergency refuge area on the 7th floor has been closed, despite being designed for use during emergencies. Blocking access to the refuge area, they said, violates safety norms and could have severe consequences in the event of a fire. Demands made to authorities The interns have urged authorities to take immediate action and listed several demands - - Restore sanitation and hygiene immediately - Ensure continuous cleaning and waste management, even during strikes - Reopen the fire refuge area and comply with fire safety regulations - Implement long-term measures to prevent recurrence At the time of publishing the story, the BMC and the CM's office were yet to acknowledge the associations complaint.

Sanjay Raut targets Praful Patel, accuses him of being ‘closer to BJP than NCP’

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on NCP working president Praful Patel, accusing him of being more aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) than with his own party, reported the PTI. Raut said Patel must act only in a manner acceptable to Maharashtra and the Marathi manoos. Addressing reporters, Raut said the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was founded and led by the Pawar family, not by Patel. “Praful Patel should do only what is acceptable to Maharashtra and the Marathi manoos. The NCP is a party of Pawars, not Patels. He is a bigger devotee of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah than a leader of his own party,” Raut alleged, according to the PTI. He also claimed that NCP state president Sunil Tatkare was leaning towards the BJP. Remarks come amid NCP leadership uncertainty The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader's comments came a day after Patel said he was not in the race for the post of NCP national president, which fell vacant following the death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a tragic air crash last week. Praful Patel had also expressed displeasure over people not associated with the NCP commenting on decisions taken by the party after Ajit Pawar’s death, reported the PTI. However, opposition leaders have continued to target Patel, accusing him of harbouring ambitions to lead the party. BJP blamed for splits in NCP and Shiv Sena Sanjay aut further alleged that the BJP was responsible for engineering splits in both the original NCP, founded by Sharad Pawar, and the Shiv Sena, established by Bal Thackeray, the news agency reported. Commenting on the Chandrapur mayoral elections, where no single party has secured a majority, Raut said Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has directed party corporators not to align with the BJP. In the 66-member Chandrapur Municipal Corporation, the Congress emerged as the single largest party with 27 seats, followed by the BJP with 23 seats and Shiv Sena (UBT) with six seats. The BSP and Shiv Sena won one seat each. (with PTI inputs)

India-China Galwan standoff book: Mumbai Congress protests against Centre

Mumbai Youth Congress on Wednesday staged a protest, urging the Centre to clarify its stand on the 2020 India-China Galwan Valley standoff and to allow the immediate publication of a book - Four Stars of Destiny book - by former Army chief General Manoj Naravane. The demonstration, led by Mumbai Youth Congress president Zeenat Shabreen, was held outside the Congress office at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan in South Mumbai, reported news agency PTI.  Slogans critical of the Modi government were raised during the agitation, with Youth Congress workers expressing anger over what they described as the Centre’s “failure” to address national security concerns. Modi govt silent on security issues: Youth Congress According to PTI, the Youth Congress alleged that the Modi government has remained silent on key security issues and has “concealed” facts related to the June 2020 Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh. A violent face-off between Indian and Chinese border troops in the Galwan Valley had resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers. Shabreen questioned what Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “hiding” about the incident and demanded that the government provide clear answers to the nation on the China issue. Galwan clash: Govt delay led to soldiers’ sacrifice, claims Congress leader She also slammed the government for not allowing the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to speak in Parliament on the sensitive matter and for preventing him from quoting from Naravane’s unpublished memoir on the India-China standoff, reported PTI.  Claiming that the government failed to take timely decisions despite inputs from the armed forces, Shabreen said this lapse led to the sacrifice of Indian soldiers during the Galwan clash. The Mumbai Youth Congress president demanded that responsibility be fixed and action taken against those responsible for the soldiers’ deaths. Stating that the sacrifice of the soldiers would not be allowed to go in vain, Shabreen said the Youth Congress would continue its agitation until the government responds to its demands, reported PTI.  Claims of restricted quotation in Parliament Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that he had been informed that he was not permitted to quote from the memoir in the Lok Sabha, despite its relevance to national security and parliamentary debate. Citing the contents of the memoir, Rahul Gandhi alleged that when Chinese tanks reached the Kailash Range, then Army Chief Gen Naravane sought urgent instructions from the political leadership. According to Gandhi, Naravane first contacted Defence Minister Rajnath Singh but received no immediate response. He then reached out to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, but again did not receive clear instructions. “When he called again, the Defence Minister said he would ‘ask from the top’,” Gandhi claimed, the news agency reported. Gandhi further alleged that there was a standing order from the highest level that Indian forces should not open fire on Chinese troops without prior political clearance, even if they had entered Indian territory. He said the Army leadership wanted to respond militarily but was constrained by the lack of clear approval. PM passed responsibility to Army Chief: Rahul Gandhi Quoting what he described as the key line from the memoir, Gandhi claimed Prime Minister Modi ultimately conveyed the message: “Jo uchit samjho woh karo” (Do what you think is appropriate), as per the PTI. Gandhi interpreted this as the Prime Minister passing responsibility to the Army Chief rather than taking a firm decision himself. “He told the Army Chief, ‘You do whatever you want; this is beyond me,’” Gandhi alleged, citing the memoir, according to the PTI.
