Friends and family members gathered in large numbers to pay their final respects to Air India engineer Ravi Subramanian, at his residence in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai, on Thursday. On Wednesday night Subramanian had been accidentally sucked into a plane engine leading to his death.

His family members refused to speak to the media, however, friends and neighbours recalled that Subramanian was very active in society affairs and helpful by nature. Subramanian was just four years away from retirement when the freak accident claimed his life.

His son, Krishna, a third year computer engineering student at D Y Patil College, said that he was told the news by his mother and colleagues of his father when he was about to go to sleep. The Subramanian family, consisting of Ravi, his wife Sujata and son Krishna have been residing in Sanpada for past 12 years. Subramanian was the only earning member.
On December 16, Subramanian left home at around 11.45 am since he was working in an afternoon shift. “I spoke to him at around 2.30 pm about some personal things. After that, when I was going to sleep at 11 pm, my mother and a few of my father’s colleagues came to my room and told me that my father had met with an accident on duty,” mentioned Krishna in his statement to Sahar police station.

The neighbours in their building praised Subramanian’s cheerful presence in the colony. “Ravi was a very cheerful person. I often used to see him around the complex. He was very helpful by nature. We came to know about his tragic end on Wednesday night. This is a very bizarre and disturbing incident,” said Mohit Bilappatte, a resident of the same building.
Members of the society had put up a notice in every wing of the complex, on his tragic death. “I knew Ravi since 10 years. It is hard to believe that he met such a horrific death,” said another resident, Radhakrishnan.
On Thursday when mid-day tried to speak to the family members, relatives requested for privacy and refused to speak. Members from his community revealed that Subramanian used to actively participate in religious and cultural events of their community. “Whenever Ravi used to get time, he would attend our community functions,” said Shashi Nair, member of Subramanian Samaj in Sanpada.
Cared about security personnel
The security personnel of the complex told mid-day that Subramanian was very generous. “We are four security guards for A-wing. Every week he used to tip us Rs 100 each, which nobody has done for us till date. He behaved very well with all of us,” said a security personnel from the complex. Subramanian’s body was brought at around 3 pm to his residence and taken to Sanpada crematorium at around 6.15 pm after rituals at his residence.
