As thousands of mill workers hit the street yesterday, the traffic headed for South Mumbai via Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road came to a crawl as the rally also followed the same route to reach its culmination point Azad Maidan.
Speaking to MiD DAY, DCP Traffic Nandkumar Chougale said, "The decision to close the south-bound section of Dr Ambedkar Road was taken at higher level as we knew that there would be a huge turnout of people. To ensure that the motorists don't get stuck in traffic, diversions were made."
The motorists coming from Eastern suburbs, Navi Mumbai and Western Suburbs towards South Mumbai via Dr Ambedkar Road had to take left from Arora cinema in Matunga and use the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg, Dr Nath Pai Marg and P D'mello Road to reach CST.

On a normal day, it takes around 40 minutes to reach CST from Sion, but it took around an hour to reach the destination yesterday.
Mill workers and leaders and supporters of different parties were also told to use the J J Flyover to reach Azad Maidan.
"The reason why the protestors were asked to use the flyover was because the road under J J flyover is always crowded and there can be a law and order problem if any untoward incident happens. So JJ Flyover was closed for motorists," said a traffic police official.
Heavy traffic was also noticed on Senapati Bapat Marg and N M Joshi Marg because of the diversion.
