Thane: A metal idol and Rs 60,000 cash were allegedly stolen by unidentified persons from a temple in Thane's Bhayander township, police said today.

The theft came to light when a priest opened the temple premises at Devchand Nagar in Bhayander yesterday morning and found the 'panchdhatu' idol of Lord Parswanath and its gold-plated 'chhatra' (umbrella) missing and the cash box broken, Bhayander police sub-inspector Sampat Chavan said.

Later, the priest lodged a complaint, estimating the total loss at around Rs 1.04 lakhs, he said. An offence has been registered under sections 457 (trespass) and 380 (theft) of the IPC, police said adding that search was on to nab the culprits.
