A wet lease bus operated for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) mounted a road divider in Mumbai's Worli area on Thursday morning after the driver braked sharply to avoid a collision, officials said.

The incident took place at around 7:49 am near the Bombay Dyeing bus stop. Following the accident, minor traffic disruption was witnessed by motorists in the busy morning commute in the Worli area.

According to an official statement, the BEST bus, running on Route 167, was travelling from P K Kurne Chowk bus station towards Prabhadevi railway station when a car approaching from the opposite direction suddenly made a U-turn. In an attempt to avoid hitting the vehicle, the driver applied the brakes abruptly. This caused the bus to veer off course, climb onto the road divider, and get stuck.

BEST staff driving on the route said that U-turn before the St. Regis hotel is a bit tricky and that should be a proper signal actually.

No injuries reported

The officials said that despite the crash no passengers or pedestrians were injured in the incident. The driver’s quick reaction is believed to have prevented a more serious accident.

BEST committee member Faisal Khan called for traffic discipline.

"An FIR should be registered against that car driver for such negligence," he said.

Operations underway

The statement said that a mechanic from Tata, which operates the bus under a wet lease arrangement, reached the spot and began efforts to remove the vehicle. A BEST mechanic was also assisting in the efforts. The normal traffic flow was being restored.
