The Mumbai division of Central Railway has rolled out a series of passenger amenity upgrades across key stations, adding new escalators, lifts, fans, LED lights and digital display systems in January 2026.
The division has installed four new escalators, two each at Kasara and Badlapur, and commissioned two lifts at Vangani and Badlapur stations.
The upgraded facilities are expected to significantly ease movement for senior citizens, pregnant women, Divyangjan, and passengers carrying heavy luggage, especially during platform interchanges.
289 older units replaced in upgrade drive
To enhance ventilation, 142 new Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) fans were installed and 289 older BLDC units replaced at various stations. BLDC fans consume 50–70 per cent less energy compared to conventional induction motor fans and operate with lower noise levels.
Additionally, eight High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans have been installed on platforms at Dadar station to improve air circulation in large public spaces.
In a parallel drive to improve illumination and energy efficiency, 362 new LED lights were added and 1,635 existing LED fixtures were replaced across stations in the division. Railway officials said the new lighting systems offer better brightness, longer lifespan and reduced maintenance costs.
Passenger information systems have also been upgraded. Four new Mail and Express train display boards, including two indoor and two outdoor units, were installed at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
56 new suburban train indicators commissioned
Meanwhile, 56 new suburban train indicators have been commissioned at stations such as Nerul, Panvel, Dockyard Road, Sewri and Reay Road, including six indicators on the Nerul foot overbridge. Older indicators at multiple locations have also been replaced to improve visibility and clarity.
Panvel-Karjat corridor gets 2.6 km tunnel to cut Mumbai commute time
Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set to get its longest tunnel, the 2.639-km Wavarle Tunnel (Tunnel-2), being built on the Panvel-Karjat corridor under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase 3.
The tunnel is a key component of the 29.6-km double-line project aimed at easing congestion on the Central Railway, cutting travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai-Raigad, and improving connectivity near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Workers collectively spent an estimated over 24 lakh man-hours working round-the-clock for 16 months to pierce the Sahyadri hill and create Mumbai suburban railway’s longest tunnel.
