This year, around 1.5 lakh Govinda participants across Maharashtra will be covered under an insurance scheme during the Dahi Handi celebrations, a major part of the state’s Gokulashtami festival. The move comes amid growing concern over injuries sustained by youth forming human pyramids during the event.
The scheme, facilitated by the state government, is being implemented through the Govinda Coordination Committee in collaboration with The Oriental Insurance Company. Last year, approximately 1.25 lakh participants were insured under a similar plan, though some were reportedly left out. Authorities have now expanded the coverage to reach more participants.
The decision follows a proposal put forth by Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and Yuva Sena leader Purvesh Sarnaik, seeking better safety measures for Govindas. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde approved the request, along with support from the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.
According to officials, the total cost of the insurance scheme is estimated at Rs 1.12 crore. The Maharashtra State Dahi Handi Govinda Association will coordinate with the government and the insurer to process the necessary documents. The Sports and Youth Services Department has been asked to oversee and execute the plan.
The insurance cover is intended to provide a safety net for participants who risk injuries while forming high pyramids to break the handi during the festival. The policy is expected to be in place before this year’s celebrations begin.
The government resolution (GR) outlined six categories of accidents and the corresponding insurance payouts. In case of death during a Dahi Handi performance, the kin of the deceased Govinda will receive Rs 10 lakh. The same amount will be paid in case of total permanent disability, such as the loss of both eyes or two limbs.
Govindas suffering the loss of one eye, one arm, or one leg will be eligible for a compensation of Rs 5 lakh. Partial or permanent disablement will be compensated in accordance with the insurance company's standard categories of percentage-based disability, said the order.
Additionally, the insurance scheme will cover medical expenses up to Rs 1 lakh for injuries sustained during performances.
The move comes as part of the state government's initiative to promote the traditional sport while ensuring the safety and well-being of participants.
