Torrential rain has claimed at least seven lives across Maharashtra, with more than 200 villagers stranded in flood-hit areas, prompting the deployment of the Army for urgent rescue and relief operations, reported the PTI.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the death toll following a high-level review of the rainfall situation at the State Emergency Operations Centre in Mantralaya. He also highlighted serious flood conditions in Nanded, Konkan, and parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha.

“Some rivers in the Konkan region are at alarming levels, and Jalgaon has suffered widespread damage,” the CM posted on X.

Several parts of Mumbai received more than 100 mm rainfall in 12 hours on Monday, with Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs topping the chart with a 139.5 mm downpour, an official from the India Meteorological Department said, according to the PTI.

Schools in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, etc will remain closed on August 19, officials said.

Incessant heavy rains pounded the island city, its suburbs, and the neighbouring districts, with the IMD issuing a red alert forecasting heavy rainfall on Tuesday as well.

Fadnavis said Mumbai received 177 mm of rainfall in just six to eight hours on Monday.

According to the PTI, in Nanded district alone, over 200 villagers remain marooned amid rising waters. Authorities have deployed Army personnel to aid evacuation and ensure the safety of residents. The local administration also confirmed the rescue of 21 individuals from Ravangaon and Hasnal villages in Mukhed taluka by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on Sunday.

Meanwhile, five persons are reported missing in the Mukhed area, located approximately 600 km from Mumbai. A steep rise in water levels at the Lendi Dam -- a key inter-state irrigation project between Maharashtra and Telangana -- has worsened the situation, with additional inflows from Latur, Udgir and parts of Karnataka.

A status report released by the Divisional Commissioner’s office on Monday stated that six deaths in the past five days across Hingoli, Nanded, and Beed districts, 205 livestock deaths, including 105 in Nanded, 1001 villages affected, with Nanded accounting for 844 of them, 457 kutcha (mud) houses and 20 pucca (permanent) houses damaged and over 2.80 lakh hectares of farmland have been impacted by excess rainfall, as per the PTI.

CM Fadnavis said the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall from 17-21 August, urging full preparedness and local authority empowerment.

“Mumbai recorded 170 mm rainfall in just 8 hours. Water-logging was reported in 14 locations, though traffic disruptions occurred only at two. Railways and metro services continue to operate normally,” the Chief Minister noted.

Fadnavis added that Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division had reported 800 affected villages, while in Vidarbha, nearly 2 lakh hectares of crops have been damaged. He assured that the situation in areas like Gadchiroli, Akola, Mehkar, and Washim is stabilising.

The CM directed officials to maintain strict vigilance in landslide-prone and tourist areas, ensure inter-state coordination, and provide essentials such as food, clean drinking water, and blankets at all relief shelters, the news agency reported.
