In a major anti-drug crackdown, police in Palghar, Maharashtra, seized opium and ganja worth Rs 10 lakh. One suspect escaped after abandoning a car containing 111.42 kg of opium. In a separate case, 2.33 kg of ganja was recovered from two accused near a hotel.

In a significant drug bust by the Palghar police, the officials have seized drugs valued at Rs 10.8 lakh and arrested two persons in this connection in Maharashtra's Palghar district, officials said on Tuesday.
As reported by PTI, the police officials during the patrolling on Monday noticed a car speeding on the Mokhada-Trimbak road.
The Superintendent of Police (Palghar Rural), Yatish Deshmukh, said, “As soon as the police found something suspicious about the speeding car, they signalled the car to stop. Despite the police officials' signal, the driver tried to speed away. The police then chased the car, and it was later found abandoned in Chinchur village. While the driver somehow managed to escape, the car was successfully confiscated,” as cited by news agency PTI.
Furthermore, upon inspection of the vehicle, the police found out that the car had around 111.42 kilograms of opium valued at Rs 780,340, the Superintendent of Police added.
One of the officials, while informing about the drug bust, stated that “two fake number plates were also found inside the vehicle, and the search for the car driver is still going on,” as cited by news agency PTI.
In another case, police intercepted two persons near a hotel at Ibadpada in the Talasari area on Sunday and seized 2.33 kilograms of ganja valued at Rs 3 lakh from them, the official said, as per PTI.
The two accused persons who have been arrested are from Palghar and the neighbouring Dadra and Nagar Haveli Union Territory. The ages of the accused are said to be about 24 and 38.
The police also highlighted that “two motorcycles and as many mobile phones were also seized from the accused, who were arrested during the late hours of Monday.”
Earlier on Monday, a 55-year-old medical shop owner from the Palghar district in Maharashtra was also arrested by the Thane Police’s Crime Branch. The accused was arrested with alleged narcotic drugs, mephedrone or MD, in his possession, which was worth over Rs. 1.69 crore.
Senior PI Sachin Gaikwad confirmed that Sharma, who is a resident of Pragati Nagar in Kudus, ran a medical shop as a front for his real business, which is selling and supplying MD.
