The rains may have reduced in the past two weeks, but the lakes which supply water to the city, have 81 per cent stock more than last year, but less than 2019. The lakes need to be filled to their capacity by the end of the next month.

The heavy spells for a week in July helped increase water levels significantly. All the seven lakes, which supply water to Mumbai, have a combined capacity of storage of 14.47 million litres of water.

On July 18, only 2.87 lakh ml (less than 20 per cent ) stock remained in the lakes. But the stock increased sharply after heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding areas. The lakes filled up to 9.37 lakh ml (64 per cent) water by July 25.

As the rain receded thereafter, the lakes received water due to the percolation effect. Without any heavy spells, the lakes are filled up to 81 per cent of their capacity as of August 14. Out of seven lakes, Tulsi, Vihar, Tansa and Modak Sagar already started overflowing.
